JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. If you could be President for a Day, what would you do? Think about it, if you could be the most powerful person in the world for a day, what would you do with that rare opportunity?

Leonard Sweet tells a true story concerning one day, which fell between the presidencies of James Polk and Zachary Taylor. Zachary Taylor was to be the next president, but since inauguration fell on the Sabbath, Taylor didn’t want to be sworn in until Monday. President James Polk officially concluded his duties on Saturday, which left Sunday, March 4, 1849, a day without a president.

To fill the vacancy, President Pro Temp of the Senate, David Atchison, became president for a day. How did he spend his day as president? Asleep! Exhausted from concluding the affairs of Congress on President Polk’s last day, he arrived home late Saturday night and went to bed. He slept through his one day as president.

Don’t sleep through this day, make the most of it.
