DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

This is the last day of 2014. Looking back over the year, is there something

you wished you could do differently? If you are like me there has always

been a great desire to return to the past with a few do-overs.

If I had a time machine, I would go back farther than just this past year.

Remember those teenage years when we were driven by compulsiveness

and were extremely impatient! Well, as adults, we can still remain in that

mind set. The bible teaches us time after time of grownups returning to

their former immature ways that consequently kept leading them into

trouble.

Now, Jesus Christ offers us a way to continue growing up. But growing up

again can be challenging. Dominican priest Father Simon Tugwell said that

Jesus offers us a way to “grow up properly by a painful dismantling of our

false grown-up-ness. To this end, the Son of God “came to be a child with

us,” so that we could be led back to childhood and then full stature of Christ

himself.”

All of us are a work in progress. I invite you to come and be a part of our

community at Central, where we encourage one another to go on to greater

and greater faith.

Good Morning!

There is no doubt about it. When you love the Lord with all your heart, it

affects every aspect of your life. How you think, speak, and act is

completely different when you are walking with Jesus! A close connection

with God prevents the waste of life that comes from sin and evil.  Ask God

to direct your every thought and action! Live a Godly life and you will not

fear death!

The truest lengthening of life is to live for Jesus, wasting no time and using

every hour, every minute, every second - to glorify our heavenly Father!

In Romans 6:23, the Bible makes it very clear about how God feels about sin,

"The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ

our Lord!" I'm so thankful that Jesus paid the price for our salvation!

Through Jesus Christ-we can have Victory! What an awesome God we serve!

Have a great day!

Good Morning:

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas yesterday. What a marvelous time

of year! I love Christmas and all that it stands for. Probably the best activity

at Christmas was the candle light service at church. Worshipping together

with friends and family makes Christmas real. It makes you forget about all

the commercialism of Christmas and hearing the Christmas Story....the real

Christmas Story about Jesus...reminds us that God, who loves us all very

much, sent his only son to us in the form of a baby, to grow up as one of us,

to be an example of what we can be if we follow God's commandments. I

hope all of you experienced some of those feelings during this Christmas

season, and I hope for all of you the peace and joy that only God's love can

give you. Have a wonderful day!

BOB

Good morning this is Bob Peden of Central - A United Methodist

Community here in Meridian. This morning I am sitting here in the

sanctuary of Central. Christmas has been celebrated in this place since 1919.

Every year since then people prepared their hearts for the arrival of the

Christ Child. Today at 1 PM, 4PM and again at 6PM we will join in that

eternal Celebration. This room will be filled with the laughter of children,

the warm greetings of worshipers, songs about the angels, the story read

once again about the birth of our King, the remembrance of his death and

resurrection. And then in silence we will once again light our candles to

remind ourselves that this baby born so long ago is the light of the world

and calls us to share his light with others. Join us at any of these three times

1 or 4 or 6 this evening. It promises to be a magical moment.

What does Christmas Mean to me?
It’s bright lights, and candles, a trip to the Christmas tree farm
It’s hot coca -marshmallows and a fire crackling in the fireplace
Christmas is a church choir
The phone ringing and one of my boys asking, “Is it all right if I charge

momma’s present to you.”
It means passing cars with Christmas packages up in the windows as

families go visiting
It’s kissing kinfolks, some you want to kiss and some you don’t

Christmas just means so much to me.
Plenty of goodies laying around the house-
It’s the utter pandemonium that is Wal-Mart on Christmas Eve, and the

peace of the still quiet house once all the young’uns are final in bed
It’s working with Wesley House, the Advent Fair, Stop Hunger Now,

Christmas at the Cain’s, the Christmas Eve Candle light services, and all the

other things we do at Central United Methodist

It’s my boys coming home and asking” Daddy can we do Operation

Shoebox can we do it daddy, can we?”
Christmas is the expression on my boys’ faces as they filled those boxes

with stuff their money bought, put the lid on them, and sent them off

What’s Christmas? It’s helping other people know the love of Christ, that’s

the Spirit of Christmas. It’s great to be a Christian at Christmas time!

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning the Lead Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

We are not far away from Christmas day, and having three young boys at the

house makes for lots of excitement. I can look on their faces and tell by the

questions that the anticipation is almost too much to bear.

This season of all seasons brings with it the anticipation that God is going

to do something marvelous in our midst. What will be this marvelous thing

accomplished in our midst? It will be the birth of Jesus who will save us

from our sins. We have heard this story over and over in Christian faith but

I hope that it doesn’t lose its power to amaze us over the love of God for his

creation. We are suppose to be full of the anticipation that is a part of this

season, not for presents and family gatherings but because this is the time

of year that we remember that God has loved us so much that he has given

us his very Son.

I hope that this is the marvelous time of year for you and that you are filled

with anticipation for Christmas Day.

Good Morning!

On a December day in 1957, while spending the Christmas Holidays at

Graceland, the king of rock-and-roll, Elvis Presley, receives his draft notice

for the U.S. Army.  Though fans sent thousands of letters to the army asking

for him to be spared, Elvis would have none of it. He was sworn in as an

army private in Memphis on March 24, 1958.  After basic training, Elvis

served in Friedberg, Germany, where an army buddy of Presley's introduced

him to a young girl named Priscilla, whom Elvis would marry some years

later.

Ironically, the once despised singer was now seen as a model for all young

Americans. After he got his polio shot from an army doctor on national

television, vaccine rates among the American population shot from 2% to 85

% by the time of his discharge.

Thousands of years ago, another young man received a government notice.

One that decreed he was to return to his birthplace and register with the

census. He too was accompanied by a young girl on his journey, but her

name was not Priscilla, it was Mary.

By being obedient to the edict of King Herod Joseph and Mary would play

their part as role models in the birth of a king. No, not the king of rock and

roll but the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, the Son of God!

DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

Have you ever stuffed a Christmas stocking with goodies? What about

putting all that stuff under the Christmas tree? You even have a lot of stuff

to do before December 25! All of that stuff can wear us out.

With so much stuff in our lives we often skip over the real meaning of

Christmas. Instead, we get caught up in the buying, selling, partying, and

celebrating that will keep us going full speed until we drop in exhaustion

on Christmas morning.

Instead of experiencing the peace and joy that Jesus Christ brings, we may

be suffering from a season of family squabbles, credit card debt, and

frustrated dreams brought on by media-hyped fantasies of happy holidays.

This Advent season, call a time out! Just for today, slow the season’s mad

rush with moments of silence. Silence the phone, light a candle, sing a

Christmas carol, take a walk, or even take a nap. Remember to give thanks

and pray.
After your much needed time out, I invite you to come and be a part of our

community, as we remember the Real reason for the season.

Good Morning:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall

be upon his shoulders; and his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor,

the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah said

those words approximately 750 years before the birth of Christ. That

prophecy came true and the birth of that child is the reason we celebrate

Christmas each year.

Christmas is not just a holiday. It is a holy day. Without Christ, we wouldn’t

have the promise of eternal life. Without Christ, our sins wouldn’t be

forgiven. Without Christ there would be no hope. Without Christ, we

wouldn’t have this holiday. Remember that as you celebrate Christmas this

year. Merry Christmas to you all!

“Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the

Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:28

Have you ever wanted something so bad, you would do almost anything to

see it happen? Hannah did. She was barren and getting older every year

while her husband’s other wife was having kids and rubbing it in her face.

God heard her prayers and graciously gave her a son. But, what did Hannah

do with that great treasure? She gave him back to the Lord, allowing him to

be raised in the temple, set apart for service to him.

Think about what you have been asking God for. Are you ready to give it

back? Is that why you haven’t received it yet? Remember, after Hannah gave

her son to the Lord, he blessed her with more.

Everything we have comes from the Father so we should

follow Hannah’s example by giving it all back for his use and glory. You’ll

be glad you did!

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning the Lead Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

Billy, a little boy, went fishing and told his mother: “I caught a hundred fish

and all of them weighed about ten pounds and I gave them all away to the

homeless.” His Mother asked their pastor to speak to him after church about

telling the truth. The minister said: Billy, a huge gorilla came into our

church growling and told me he was going to eat me in four bites. But then a

little two pound poodle came in and killed that big gorilla right there on the

spot. Then he drug the gorilla outside, dug a hole and buried him. Now

Billy, do you believe that story? Without batting an eye, Billy, looked up

and said: “Yes, sir. I sure do. That was my dog.”

Like Billy, some people have a difficult time telling the truth. Jesus told his

followers to let your yes be yes and no be no. Whether we want to believe it

or not, each time we open our mouth our credibility is at stake. Knowing

this, let us strive for integrity by our words and actions.

Good morning this is Bob Peden of Central A United Methodist Community

here in Meridian. Christmas is almost here. We see the celebration

everywhere. This Sunday at Central the Sanctuary Choir will present a

beautiful program of Christmas carols and lessons which will inspire us to

prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child. It will be in the

sanctuary at 10:55 This Sunday morning, December 14th. That evening

Central is also presenting a Christmas pageant, which includes music and

dance as well as a dramatic presentation calling us to be peace and light in a

world that loves the darkness. That will begin at 6:00 PM also in the

Sanctuary. Anyone and everyone is invited to come to either of these events

as together we Celebrate the birth of the King.

Good Morning!

Think before you speak! The Bible has quite a bit to say about how we use

our words. In Eph 4:29, we're told, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come

out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up ..."

We need to be aware of how powerful our words can be.  Once spoken, they

can never be taken back. The old saying "Sticks and stones may break my

bones, but words will never hurt me" is simply not true! Unkind words hurt

deeply, and may even destroy someone's self esteem for life! The Bible is

filled with stories of people who God sustained through His words of

encouragement. How we speak - reflects Christ's character within us. Be

generous with words of encouragement. When tempted to give an angered

response, stop and ask yourself, "What would Jesus say?" God will give us

the victory. Have a great day.

DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

We have just started the church’s Advent Season. It is a time, once again, we

think of all that Jesus did for us. During Advent, we consider his birth, his

life, his teaching, his healing, his friendships, his suffering and death, and

his resurrection.

This can be almost too overwhelming for any of us to take in. What we can

take in is that God is here, with you, with me, and everybody. So, whether

you are doing your Christmas shopping, fixing a holiday dinner, or just

watching TV, God is with you.

Since Jesus was born as a human child, he was called Emmanuel, which

means “God with us.” He was here on earth for 33 years. But that was not

the end. He said he would send his Spirit to be with us always, everyday,

everywhere, and in every situation. So, think about that! You or I are never

alone, never having to make decisions on our own, nor do we have to travel

alone, because God is with us.

During this season, take time to say hello to the one who is forever walking

beside you. Invite him into your life. Then go to your Father’s house to give

thanks. If you do not have a church home, you are always welcome at

Central.

Good Morning:

This is a busy, busy time of year. We just got through Halloween and

Thanksgiving and now are getting ready for Christmas. With all the hustle

and bustle of shopping, decorating, cooking and planning, let's not forget

that Jesus is the reason for the season.

When I asked some of the four year olds at the Children's Center what was

the best thing about Christmas, they naturally said, getting lots of presents.

I told them the story of Jesus' birth and told them how the wise men

brought gifts to the baby Jesus. I like to think that this is the reason we give

gifts to one another......to remember those precious gifts the wise men

brought to a precious baby. Remind your children of that and help them to

understand that Christmas is celebrated only because of a tiny baby. No

other reason. Have a wonderful day!

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning the Lead Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

How many of us remember the old country song entitle “Looking for love in

all the wrong places!” Many people really do look for love in all the wrong

places. They try to find happiness and joy in money and material

possessions, but it doesn’t work because we have been created as spiritual

beings, not material beings.

Others look for meaning and purpose in a job or even another person, but

still feel empty in life. Pascal said “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the

heart of every person, which cannot be filled by any created thing but only

by God the creator.”

As a Lead pastor for the past 20 years, I have watched the brokenness of

people’s lives and the endless search that they are on. I promise you that if

you will stop looking in the wrong places for love and open your heart to

the love of God, your purpose will be revealed. I invite you to find your

purpose with a relationship with Christ.

The "Million Dollar Quartet" is the name given to recordings made on

Tuesday, December 4, 1956, in the Sun Record Studios in Memphis. The

recordings were of an impromptu jam session among music greats Elvis

Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. It was arguably the

first super-group in the history of American Music.

When the tracks were released, Cash’s distinct voice is absent from the

recordings. Music historians feel that Cash had come by the Sun Studios to

collect on money owed him, and after receiving it, he left to go shopping for

the upcoming Christmas holiday. Sadly, it is that way with many of us

today. We spend so much time cleaning, cooking, shopping, and preparing

for the arrival of Christmas, that when the day finally arrives, we are too

tired or distracted to enjoy the moment. Jesus, himself, once told Mary and

Martha that they should spend time with Him rather than the things of this

world that would always be here.

So during this Christmas season, take a moment away from wrapping gifts,

sit down with a refreshing cup of hot chocolate, pick up the Bible and

reconnect with the source of the holiday. The packages will still be there

when you return, I promise.

Good morning, this is Bob Peden of Central - A United Methodist

Community here in Meridian. This coming Sunday, December 7th in the

8:30 worship service, the Praise Band will present Not a Silent Night, a

program of music and readings that will give each one a glimpse of how

Mary may have viewed the events of Bethlehem as she reflects upon the life

of Jesus from the foot of the cross on which he died. We look back on that

night in Bethlehem and imagine it in a warm fuzzy light, quiet and

peaceful. Mary must have remembered what a noisy night it was and how

the birth and life of Jesus was anything but peaceful. Join us for an

inspiring hour of music, worship and reflection this Sunday morning at 8:30

Good Morning! I’m John Branning the Lead Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

Let me begin first by wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the

Meridian area. Today, many will gather with family and friends and

celebrate this holiday with plenty of food and laughter. We may even have a

little nostalgia today as we remember past Thanksgivings and the

wonderful memories that we have of the people and places that made it so

special. However, the true purpose of this holiday is for us to stop and give

thanks to our God for all the blessings that he has given unto us.

We have been blessed beyond measure, and I hope we are able to see all that

God has given us. I do hope that this year we will not hoard these blessing

for ourselves. We should share with others that have less than us. Let us

share a meal, a prayer, and a good word to those in need. We are commanded

to love God and our neighbor as ourselves. I invite you to come live a life

that is thankful with us at Central.

Good morning this is Bob Peden of Central - A United Methodist

Community here in Meridian, Mississippi. As Christians we are quick to

talk about the Kingdom of God or our Lord Jesus Christ. But as American

citizens we have very little experience of living in a Kingdom or under the

lordship of a ruler. God in his gracious love has given us the freedom to

choose whether we will live in his kingdom or not. And we make that

choice each and every day of our lives. And our choice today will reflect our

choice for eternity.  Unfortunately many of us would really like to have it

Good Morning:

Thanksgiving Day will soon be here. For most of us, Thanksgiving is all

about food, family, and fun. Often, we get so caught up in the food and

family that we forget about God. Although, we should be thanking God

every day for all our many blessings, we forget.

Thanksgiving reminds us that we need to stop and give thanks. All of us, no

matter our situation, have things for which we are thankful. Psalm 62:1 tells

us "It is good to give thanks to the Lord." Psalm 100:4 says to come into His

presence with Thanksgiving. There are many verses in the Bible that tell us

to be thankful and to thank God. Count your blessings. Take the time to say,

Thank you, God. And then remember to thank God for something every

single day, not just on Thanksgiving. God, our Heavenly Father, loves to

hear from His children. Have a wonderful day!

Good Morning!

Some Christians mistakenly think they have to be "perfect" before they can

come to Jesus! They believe they must stop sinning, before Jesus could

possibly love them. Stop smoking, drinking, cheating, lying, etc ... But the

truth is: we are all sinners and one sin is no different than another. If we

waited till we were "perfect" to come to Jesus . . . no one would ever get

there, because no one is perfect!

Jesus accepts us with open arms! He doesn't wrinkle up His nose with

disgust at our stench! No! Instead, He covers us with His robe of

righteousness! Jesus LOVES the sinner, but hates the sin! In fact, He loves

each one of us so much that He gave His life for us! He has already paid the

price!  He is calling out to all His children,
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you

rest!"  Won't you come to Jesus today?

Good Morning!

Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people

of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat! We

remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the

melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now our strength is dried

up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.” Numbers 11:4-6

There are few things in life more repulsive than ungratefulness. Whether

it’s a spoiled child screaming for more or an adult who is unappreciative of

another’s giving – ungratefulness is ugly! Remember God’s provision of

manna for the Israelites in the wilderness? This food appeared every

morning, except on the Sabbath, enough to feed the nation. If the Lord had

not produced the manna, people would have starved.

Oddly enough, the people weren’t thankful. They bemoaned that the “fish

they ate in Egypt cost nothing”-nothing but their freedom.

Gratefulness should abound when we witness God’s provision in our lives.

Next time you are compelled to complain about something, like your job,

family, or anything in between, look at it in the light of God’s provision.

Don’t complain about your manna!

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor of Central United

Methodist Church.

In the bible, Jesus tells the story of 10 young bridesmaids waiting on the

groom to return home with his bride. Five of them were prepared to greet

the new couple, but the others were not. These five did not take enough oil

to keep their lamps lit during the delayed return of the groom. So, they had

to leave in search for more. But, when they returned, it was too late.

In our fast-pace world, we tend to overlook the necessary things in life,

while focusing on the less important. Jesus warns us to not become

negligent in our walk of faith.

One commentator said, “We can ensure that our lamp is always full of oil by

living humbly, being a comfort to others, being merciful, seeking justice

and insisting on peace.”

Do you see areas in your life where you have been negligent? What can you

do this day to ensure your lamp is full of oil?

Central wants to help you in your walk of faith. I invite you to come and be

a part of our community. Worship times are 8:30, 9:45, and 10:55. See you

This is Bob Peden of Central - A United Methodist Community here in Meridian. Have you noticed the changing of the leaves. How could you not have noticed. The red, orange, yellow of the autumn leaves is always a treat. But not all trees embrace that change. Some hold onto their green leaves until winter hits and they just turn brown. And here in Mississippi we are blessed with lots of pine trees that hold onto there old needles until they are pushed away by the new ones sprouting in the spring. People respond to change in those ways too. Some of us turn bright and cheerful at the prospect of something new. We release the old and anticipate the new. Others of us hold onto the old for as long as we possibly can. We avoid any change whatsoever. This fall as you watch the leaves change, think about which kind of tree you are like. God created us all. Change is life. How do you respond to change.

Good Morning!

Hank Williams dropped out of school to pursue his dream of being a country music star, but ran into problems with alcoholism. He married Audrey Sheppard at a gas station in Alabama. But when the marriage hit the rocks, Audrey threw Hank out of the house.

Fueled by heartache, Williams wrote the song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Shortly afterward he died at age 29. His songs of loneliness and heartache made him an American icon, for somehow his sorrowful melodies touched the hearts of those who are so lonely they could cry.

The Bible has a one-word answer for loneliness: Fellowship. That's our opportunity to be best friends with the Lord and part of His worldwide family. It's the divine answer.

If you feel so lonely you could cry, take the focus off yourself. Think of how much God loves you and find another person whom you can serve today.

When we see the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin.

I'm not really that great at texting. When I first got my cell phone, students would text me and normally call me back before I would have time to finish typing out my reply. I'm just a little slow at it, although I am getting better. I still prefer hearing someone’s voice on the other end of the line. And the lingo changes so fast that by the time I learn the text messaging abbreviations everyone is using, the new sixth graders in the youth group have a whole new set.

Personally, I prefer real language in actual words myself. I miss the descriptive words and details that we get away from when we email and text so much.

I'm thankful that God didn't leave any details or descriptions out of His Word, and I don't want to miss any of it. God used the writers of the Scripture to put those things down in detail for us. His Word is for us. I think that in this fast paced world that some of us make a regular habit of checking our emails, our text messages, and even our voice mail, but we forget to check those messages that are there for us from the Lord. All those messages we find in His Word were meant for us to learn from. They are important. Every word.

Matthew 4:4 says, "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. Today we celebrate Veterans Day, which was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, as Armistice Day and then changed in 1954 to our modern Veterans Day.

On this day, we as the people of the United States set aside time to remember that the price of freedom has been paid by every generation of Americans. It is right for us to remember the sacrifices that service to our nation requires of these men and women. Jesus said that no greater love could one ever have than to be willing to lay down their life for another, and truly that is what every veteran has done through the years.

I hope that today you will take a moment to thank our service men and women. I am proud to say that I am a combat veteran of the United States Army serving in Iraq from 2010-2011, and from one Veteran to another, I hope that this day is blessed above all others and thank you for your service to God and our Country.

I love the book of Psalms. No matter where you find yourself in life, there is a Psalm to meet you where you are.  David lived out every human emotion and “talked” with God about it. As we are about to enter the time of year that is centered around thankfulness, the writings of the Psalmist should serve as a reminder, that no matter what the Psalm is about, it almost always begins or ends with a word of gratitude or praise.  Even in the darkest of times, the deepest of despair, if we allow ourselves to glimpse – God’s love and action is present even in those times, shaping and molding us in ways we never imagine.

When WE turn loose of our human selves, we can look around and see what God has one in our lives, and like David, sing songs of praise, knowing that even in the midst of trial and tribulation, there is MUCH to be thankful for, for God’s love and peace never leave or fail. So in these days of thanksgiving, let us not forget to give thanks to the One who NEVER leaves our side…in the saddest of times, or the happiest of times – His love and care is always only a breath away!

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. November is a time that we focus upon thanksgiving, and for most people, that is just one day in this month when they will get together and have a meal with family and friends. However, the Bible constantly talks about the attitude of a follower of Jesus being one who is always thankful.

Thankful people are able to see the beauty in the small things in life and to offer words of hope and encouragement to others. Thankful people are always able to find a blessing that they have received each and every day. Thankful people are those who realize that they deserve nothing and have been given everything.

In our society we are taught to expect to live in nice homes, drive new cars, and travel the world. Yet, the real blessings of life are not the ones that you can buy; they are those that surround you every day. I hope today that you will count your blessings and name them one by one and know truly what God has done.

GLENDA

Good Morning:

Many years ago when my son was in first grade, I taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade choir at Central. We would meet once a week and since I had no one to keep my 3 year old daughter, she went with me. Turned out, she was one of my best singers; however, she didn't always say the correct words. One of the songs we sang had these words: “Jesus, Jesus, Can I tell you how I feel? You have given me your riches. I love you so.” Tiffanie sang it as “You have given me your britches. I love you so.”

When the other children laughed at her rendition, she got kind of upset. I told her she had the right idea because God would give us what we need —after-all, he gave us the most important gift he had.....His Son, Jesus Christ....why wouldn't he give us His britches if he thought it necessary? I can't sing that song now, without singing it the way Tiff sang it.

God is there for you, whatever your need. Remember that and have a great day!

SABRINA

If I were doing a “commercial” for Central I would tell you that you should come and join us because we have THREE dynamic worship opportunities each Sunday.  You can come at 8:30 and experience Contemporary Worship, complete with a Praise Team, reaching families of all ages; OR you can come at 9:45 to our Connect Service – A little “edgier” reaching people who might want to sleep in a little later, who don’t have the pitter patter of little feet to wake them up BRIGHT and early. 10:55 is Traditional Worship, complete with the procession of the Cross, Bible, and a robed Sanctuary Choir.

We have AWESOME Children and Youth, and family Worship opportunities. But I am NOT doing a commercial. I am inviting you to join me at Central, a place where we all struggle, have self doubt, WANT to live as God would have us, but often fail miserably. We are a COMMUNITY – a COMMUNITY of FAITH, walking this often difficult road of life – together! Come and join us in this journey. You will feel love, acceptance and connect with people just like you, no matter where your road has led! Be blessed and have a blessed day!

DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. There are a lot of people in the world who believe that money and material wealth will provide them with happiness. So often, we strive and strategize in order to get into a certain position in life. Then we soon realize that it was not what we thought it would be. The nice clothes, cars, homes and careers cannot truly satisfy that which is deep down. No amount of money in the world can bring peace to a soul. True happiness does not come from what we have. However, there is a way to gain it. God has a plan that each one of us can follow in order to obtain peace, joy and security.

Catherine of Genoa said this about God’s strategy, “The selfishness that is within us, however, is contrary to God that God cannot induce us to do his will except by clever strategy: promising us greater things than the world can give.”

Jesus once compared the life of two people, a poor man and rich man. The poor man who believed inherited a kingdom, which the unbelieving rich man inherited a place of torment. Friends, true peace can only come from a relationship with Jesus Christ. He does not require you to have a ton of money, a career, or wear nice clothes. All he wants is your heart.

DENNIS

Good Morning. Tonight is the time when kids will dress up in their costumes, knocking on doors and saying, “Trick or Treat.” Then adults will be filling all of the youngsters’ bags with candy and other treats. Even with the scary overtones of Halloween, this can be a great way to demonstrate Christian charity and generosity. There is no other time of the year that we give to complete strange-looking strangers so openly. People, who would never talk to each other otherwise, will be caring on a pleasant conversation tonight.

This is a rare time when vanity takes a back seat to simple human relationships.
It is important for us to develop such things within our lives each day. Richard Rolle once wrote just because people may seem to have it all together does not mean that is the case. On the other hand, “the person’s whose heart is aglow with charity, ever eager to love God and indifferent to vanity” is the one who is genuine and real.  Jesus said, “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar, but on a lamp stand so that those who enter may see the light.” Friends, let your light shine tonight, even to the scariest people. And in the morning, let us continue to be generous, kind, and charitable. This is Dennis Gossett.

JIM CAIN

Is Oprah’s HARPO studio in Chicago, IL, haunted? Many of her staff believe so, and the head lady herself will no longer go on record to speak about the haunting.

How did this storage building that once housed weapons become haunted? July 24, 1915, this is the date Chicago suffered one of its most notable tragedies. The Western Electric Company held its annual picnic. The WEC employees and their families had boarded the Eastland Steamer for the 20 minute ride.

Prior to pulling out, the passengers lined up on one side to take a picture, which caused the steamer to be off balanced. The engineer then attempted to correct the problem by opening up the ballast, but rather than stabilizing, the steamer capsized causing 800 passengers to die. Their bodies were pulled from the water and placed in the Second Battalion Armory’s Gym, the building now known as HARPO Studios.

For many this would explain the sounds that sometimes echo through the building or the “Lady in Gray” who is often seen moving around the building. Is she still looking among the dead for her lost love, or is she too one of the victims? We may never know for sure, but what we do know is what the Bible says in 1 John 4:4, “Because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world”. So no matter what you see or hear during this time of Fall Harvest remember that God is greater than them all!

PEDEN

RAY

Good Morning!

Medical research has discovered your heart health and mental health may depend on your ability to reduce hurt and anger by forgiving others and forgiving yourself.

The Lord commands us to forgive one another when we’re wronged or when we do others wrong.
We as humans can forgive others, although we’re not capable of completely erasing the bad memory from our brain. We’re all human so we mess up sometime.  So, why is forgiving yourself a lot harder than forgiving others?

It’s a lot easier to forgive others than it is to forgive ourselves because, after all, they don’t live in our head, always reading us the same old riot act about the wrong we committed.

These wonderful forgiveness instructions have been in our Bible for a long, long time.  Eph 43-25 tells us, “I alone am He who blots away your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.”

How tempting it is to remind someone of a past offense!  But when God forgives our sins He totally forgets them. Thank you Lord!

SABRINA

Before the week is out, ghosts, goblins, superheros and princesses will take to the streets, and for a short period of time, go from door to door, not as themselves, but disguised as the person they want to be.

As adults, we often find ourselves in disguise – and not for fun! Does today find you with a smile on your face, laughing and joking with those around you, when inside you are crying and alone? When Robin Williams recently died at his own hand, the world was stunned! How could a person who brought so much laughter and joy to the world ever think of himself as alone and unworthy? The fact is that at different times in our lives we have all worn a mask, not wanting the world to know our inner thoughts and feelings.

If today finds you feeling alone, desperate and depressed, I encourage you to reach out to someone close to you. NOTHING is so bad that given time it will not get better. I also invite you to find love and acceptance here at Central. We are a COMMUNITY of faith, not without warts and problems, but walking ALONGSIDE each other, following our God!  Come join us. JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. At Central, we believe in having spiritual influence in the lives of others. What we mean by this is that since God’s love was made visible to us through Jesus Christ, we should also imitate Christ and share his truth and love with others.

Many people feel that faith is something that is so personal that it is to be cultivated in the privacy of ones on heart. However, if we follow the example of Jesus, we see that he spoke from mountain tops, he didn’t mutter in the valleys.

When the Roman soldiers, uncertain of which man they were to grab, arrested all the disciples, Jesus stepped forward and said, “I’m the one you’re looking for, let the others go. He did not hide who he was.

D.L. Moody the great evangelist said that before he spoke, he would pray for the Lord to set him on fire. A light should be set on a hill, not hidden under a bushel, and since Jesus was not a low profile person, then neither should we. I hope you will be visible today sharing the hope of Jesus.

GLENDA

Good Morning:

What's your favorite season of the year? Is it Spring, with its new blossoms of life springing up everywhere? Or the lazy, hazy, crazy, days of Summer? Or is it Fall with the lovely autumn hues that God with his paintbrush splashes over the trees....or winter may be your favorite, with glowing fireplaces to keep you warm and cozy.

The year is always changing. Whatever your favorite...or least favorite season...know that there is a never-changing Lord who sees the year from the beginning to the end; who will be with you in each season of your life. So whether you are in the middle of a wonderful season, or thinking a dreadful season will never end, remember, it is all just for a season and this will pass, but He remains. Enjoy His presence no matter the time of year. Have a wonderful day!

“Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love” Ephesians 1:4

Don’t we all long to be accepted, to belong? So many messages tell us we do not. We get cut from the basketball team, the social club invitation never comes, and we’re dropped from the honor roll, or lose the big promotion we thought was in the bag at work. Everything from acne to anorexia leaves us feeling like the little kid with no date to the prom.

We react. We validate our existence with a flurry of activity. We do more, buy more, and achieve more. We try to say the right things, wear the right clothes, and hang out with the right crowd. We try to get in and fit in. All of it is a way of asking that age old question, “Do I belong? Do I have worth?”

God has the answer. His grace, His outrageous, overflowing, stretching beyond the limits of our human imagination - is the definitive reply, “Be blessed, my child. I love you. I accept you just the way you are. I have adopted you into my Family.” Adopted children are chosen children.

Consider this, make sure you can wrap your mind around it. Accept it, enjoy it. There is something about you that God absolutely adores. You cause his eyes to widen, His heart to beat a little faster, He chose you to be in His family, never doubt it, and never forget it.

DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor at Central United Methodist Church. Today is going to be full of choices. Each one of you will have a variety of choices to make. Some of those will be simple-no-brainers, while others will be complex and require a bit more thought. Along our journey today, we all will have the choice to do good or do bad. We can choose to say a kind word when someone is being mean. We will have the choice to give when someone is taking away. The life we lead is ultimately up to us. I can choose not to do what everyone else is doing. I can choose to stop and go in another direction. It is up to me whether or not to blame my problems on other people or to take responsibility for my life. God has created each one of us in a unique way by giving us free will. With free will comes the responsibility that each one of us will have to answer for. Have we worked for the greater good in the world or have we torn down lives? The Apostle Paul is one who chose a life that made a difference. He wrote, “I have not reached my goal, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” His choice was to be a follower of Jesus no matter the cost. What will you choose today?

Good Morning:

When Moses meets God at the burning bush, God identifies himself as the Great I Am. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense until we move to the New Testament and we find many instances where Jesus tells us who “I Am” truly is. He says, “I Am! And I became flesh..I was given a name above every name—the name of Jesus. He also says, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; I am your Shepherd, Your Counselor, Your Redeemer; I Am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end; I am the Door; I am the Bread of Life; I am Your Provider; I Am Love, Life, Truth, Joy, Hope, Peace. I Am! He is the eternal tri-une God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), the I AM for yesterday, today, and forever...and for whatever you need right now. Trust the true “I AM” of your life and you will have a God – filled day!

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. Jesus walked up to the fisherman and said, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. They dropped their nets and followed him.

He met a woman at a well and said, Follow me and you will never be thirsty again. She dropped her bucket and ran to get all of her friends.

History repeatedly has shown that people hunger for something larger than themselves. In fact the idea of having a higher purpose is a vital ingredient to the human psyche. The reason that this exists in all of us is because we have been created with a divine mark upon us. We long for something more. We hunger for relationships that will bring meaning and purpose.

Jesus told his disciples that he had come to change people’s lives to fill the void within them and to give them the direction that they were longing for. I hope that you have found the higher purpose for God created you, and if you are still searching, then I invite you to continue your journey with us at Central and together we will follow the one that calls us to be fishers of people.

Good Morning!

A well-known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20 bill.  "Who would like this $20 bill" he asked?” Hands started going up.

He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it...?" Still the hands were up in the air.

"What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.

"My friends, we’ve all learned a valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it didn’t decrease in value. Many times in our lives, we’re crumpled, and ground into the dirt by our decisions and circumstances that come our way.  But no matter what happens, you will never lose your value.
Dirty or crumpled, you’re still priceless to those who LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join us this Sunday Evening for Central’s annual Trunk or Treat Street Party which begins at 4:30 p.m. on 10th Street between 22nd and 23rd Avenue.  Many of our members and friends will have decorated their cars, set up games – all to allow children AND adults to enjoy an afternoon of fun and fellowship! We encourage children and adults to come dressed as their favorite, “non scary” character, jump in the jumpies, play laser tag, get their face painted or get a new look at the crazy hair booth.  We will have cotton candy, popcorn, hamburger and hot dogs, and lots of music!

If you are currently looking for a church home, I encourage you to come, visit, and get to know our church family. It is easy to slip in and out of worship and miss that sense of family and belonging!  THIS is an opportunity to get to know each other a little better and to reflect and enjoy the fun of the season through the eyes of a child! OH, and don’t forget – we have worship Sunday morning at 8:30, 9: 45, or 10:55! Come be a part of our family!

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye
might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation:
but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33

Lately everywhere you look, there are posters or t-shirts with the words "Keep Calm and...."  emblazoned on them and you fill in the blank depending on your mood or situation at the time. The original phrase was "Keep Calm and Carry On," which was on a poster issued in the UK as a morale booster during World War 2. I have even seen some that say "Keep Calm and Eat Cake" or "Keep Calm and Eat Chocolate." That’s advice I can live by.

The more I think about those sayings, the more I am reminded how much the Lord can keep me calm. It was at the beginning of the summer when I wrote down some of my thoughts, but now with all of the continuing violence in the Middle East and all the political unrest here in our own country, it makes me have a need to keep calm more than ever right now. I'm just so glad that I have the Lord to go to for that calming. The Lord grounds me and helps me to be able to "carry on". After all, He has "...overcome the world." John 16:33.
So, how do you keep calm? Come to Central this Sunday

Recently I was looking over a lesson for our Jr. High Youth on comparison in the “Land of Er” I am smartER, biggER, cutER. We know this is a HUGE issue for children from the time they enter Kindergarten. There is always the latest toy, doll, clothing – it never ends. But there is an old cliché’ “keeping up with the Joneses” that reminds us this is NOT just a problem with children, AND It is not just a monetary thing.

I go to the gym and see the girl 20 years my junior and desperately want that body; we go to the symphony or any concert, and dream of having the talent of the person on stage.  As adults, we fail to remember the Parable of the valuable coins, where the master handed out five coins to one servant, two to another and one to yet another. We are to remember God gives EACH of us gifts, not of equal value, but as individuals made in HIS image. What we do with our gifts is a reflection of OUR response to God. Where does today find you? For me, I am going to NOT look at the younger girl at the gym today, but look at MY reflection in the mirror and remember, I am EXACTLY who God wants me to be on THIS day – a few pounds heavier maybe, but blessed BEYOND words. I just need to use the gifts HE gave me to HIS glory! Join me today in the celebration of YOU!

DENNIS

Good Morning. During our last time together, I talked about the importance of prayer. Hopefully, some of us have become more intentional. Have you ever noticed that some time prayer can be a wonderful experience when our minds are sharp and we are emotionally charged. Then there are the other moments when our intellect is dull and our emotions are flat. That is when we want to beat ourselves up. We think that something must be wrong with us.

Spiritual writer Evelyn Underhill recognized this very natural symptom and said this, “We are in a dangerous place, if the worth of our prayer life depends upon a constant high level of feeling or understanding.” But, she encourages us by saying, “Even when our hearts are cold and our minds are dim, prayer is still possible for us.” In the bible, we are told that many people, whose minds were dim by pagan worship, were enlightened by the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through the preaching of Paul. See, the power of prayer does not depend upon how you and I are feeling. The affects are not relying upon human effort. The simple act of praying opens us up to something greater than ourselves. This is Dennis Gossett for Central United Methodist Church.

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. If you could be President for a Day, what would you do? Think about it, if you could be the most powerful person in the world for a day, what would you do with that rare opportunity?

Leonard Sweet tells a true story concerning one day, which fell between the presidencies of James Polk and Zachary Taylor. Zachary Taylor was to be the next president, but since inauguration fell on the Sabbath, Taylor didn’t want to be sworn in until Monday. President James Polk officially concluded his duties on Saturday, which left Sunday, March 4, 1849, a day without a president.

To fill the vacancy, President Pro Temp of the Senate, David Atchison, became president for a day. How did he spend his day as president? Asleep! Exhausted from concluding the affairs of Congress on President Polk’s last day, he arrived home late Saturday night and went to bed. He slept through his one day as president.

Don’t sleep through this day, make the most of it.

Good Morning:

Have you ever heard the saying, “If life gives you lemons, just make lemonade?” You know lemons are kinda sour by themselves, but if you add a little sugar and water to it, you can change that sourness to something sweet and refreshing.

That's what God can do for us. He will take the real lemons of life—the sour situations we can't deal with.. and, in all His creative wisdom and love, work it for our good, turning sour to sweet, creating something of sweetness and beauty for you and for the world around you. Hand over the lemons to Him! Give that hurt, disappointment, or tragedy to God and let Him handle it. Then sit back and watch what He makes of it.....and have a wonderful day!

Good Morning:

I look in the mirror and I see …..WRINKLES! Where did they come from? I don't want them! It makes me sad, but then I remember, they don't matter to God!! Ask Abraham and Sarah who in their wrinkled up years gave birth to a beautiful son! Or ask Moses...the man who at 80 years old, became a leader of God's people. How about the elderly prophetess Anna who waited in the Temple to bless the promised Messiah.

Wrinkles don't matter when you are happily doing the Will of God. We serve an ageless God..and if he can use Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and Anna, He can use me....and you...righteous wrinkles and all. And if you don't have those wrinkles, yet, don't despair, for your day is coming!

Enjoy the blessings and love of the Lord....be a proud member of the “wrinkled righteous! Have a wonderful day!

One day a man pulls up to an old country store on the outskirts of town, hops out of his automobile and asks the old man sitting out front,” How are the people in this town, old man?"

The old man looked at the stranger and asked,” How were the people in the town you just left?" The man looked at him with a puzzled expression and replied,” They were mean and hateful people, hard to work and live with.  We were glad to get out of that stinking place." The old man nodded his head and replied,” Well, that's how you'll find the people in this town."

The man drove away in a cloud of dust and the old man settled back down in his rocking chair in front of the store. A little while later another car pulls up and a man gets out and says,” Excuse me sir, but how are the people in this town?" The old man looked at the stranger and said," How were the people in the town you just left?" The stranger smiled and answered,” They were warm-hearted and kind, always willing to help a person out. We hated to leave." The old man nodded his head and replied,” That is how you'll find the people in this town."

The lesson to be learned from this can be found in Luke 6:31and is often called the golden rule,” do unto others as you would have them do unto you."  If this lesson is learned by all of us, we may be surprised at how nice a place the world becomes!

RAY

Good Morning!

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath.
James 1:19

The Huffington Post carried an article on the five skills of good listeners: "They give special attention to the one speaking, they listen without being judgmental or reacting too soon, they discern where the speaker is coming from, they interrupt sparingly, and they respond with understanding."
Apply those principles to listening to God's Word. Picking up our Bibles, we should give God our full attention, withhold our opinion until we understand what He is saying, listen without interrupting, and respond with understanding and obedience.

When James said, "Be quick to hear," he wasn't just talking about listening to each other. The verses that follow speak of being quick to listen to the Lord: "Let every man be swift to hear ... and receive with meekness the implanted word ... Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.  Let's be quick to listen, swift to believe, and eager to obey!

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. I read a story not long ago about a man who slipped and fell off a cliff while hiking on a mountaintop. Luckily, he was able to grab a branch on his way down, and as he held on for dear life, he looked down and saw that he was several hundred feet from the ground.

When he looked up, he saw that he was twenty feet from the top where he had slipped, and he began to cry out for help. Help! Help! Is anybody up there? Help! A booming voice from heaven said, “I am here, and I will rescue you if you believe in me.” I believe! I believe! The young man yelled back. “If you believe me, let go of the branch, and then I will save you.” The young man looked down again. Seeing the rock valley below, he quickly looked back up and shouted, “Is there anybody else up there?”

How true it is that trust is a word easier said than lived out. Yet, God is always calling upon us to trust him in the most difficult of situations. I guess we have got to learn to just let go of the branch, don’t we?

DENNIS

Good Morning. I’m Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor at Central United Methodist Church. Let me ask you a serious question, “How is your prayer life?” Has it grown dull and boring? Have you allowed other things to creep in and take its place? Maybe you have never been the one to pray.

I believe that I can ask these types of questions, because I have been at each of these places before. Often, I must remind myself that there is power in prayer. If we allow it, prayer can be more than just a list of what we want. Making it just a list of our desires and needs, will only lead us to great and greater disappointment. Instead of it being a list of wants, it can be formational. Prayer can mold us into the people Jesus wants us to be. He said if we would listen to him then we would love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, bless those who curse us, and pray for those who abuse us. There is no better way to listen to Jesus than being in prayer. Today, we can resolve to live faithfully in the direction of our prayers, and our act of faith in God’s power by praying for our enemies.  Prayer allows our anger to subside and allows God’s grace to enter. Now is the time to make our prayers the agent of peace in our world.

JIM CAIN

So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17

People do some strange things. We have little routines; little rituals that we go through that help us function. The great musician and composer, Beethoven was no exception. He wrote beautiful music. Do you know how Beethoven got ready each day to write music? He would pour cold water over his head. He believed that it stimulated his brain.

People do all kinds of things to help make themselves better. We read, we jog, we take vitamins. But there is one way to improve ourselves that is better than any other. That is to invite Jesus into our hearts.

The Scripture I read earlier is about a violent man named Saul who let Jesus come into his heart and became one of the most influential Christians that ever lived. We too can have that change in our lives if only we are willing to let God come into our hearts. He’s waiting to hear from us today if only we will call on Him. That's better than a glass of cold water over the head any day! Even in this sweltering Mississippi heat.

GLENDA

Good Morning:

Every day we have choices to make...choices that are major and choices that are minor...either of which can stress us to the max. Psalm 46:10 tells us to “Be still and know that I am God.” Being stressed is easy...being still is never easy, not in this busy, dizzy world, whether you are at home, work, church, school or out in the middle of a big green field!

But we will never have inner peace until we know our Heavenly Father. In Him is stillness, abiding in Him is rest, sitting at His feet is peace, drinking in His word is life. His presence makes all the difference. Jesus said, “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” What a wonderful promise from a wonderful Lord! Do you know Him? I hope you do. If not, seek Him and you will find Him. Have a wonderful day!

PEDEN

Good morning this is Bob Peden of Central - a United Methodist Community here in Meridian.  Early in the gospel of Luke Jesus uses Peter’s boat to teach the crowds and then has Peter let down his nets, resulting in a miraculous catch of fish. When Peter sees what power Jesus has he says “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”  Often when we experience God’s power we react the same. Frightened by the reality of our sinfulness in the face of God’s power. But Jesus invited Peter and invites us to use our skills in a new way, for the good of the gospel. Central is a community of believers who lay our skills and talents before Jesus, asking him to show us how we might use them for good. You are invited to join as at Central. You too may experience the power of the risen Lord and hear his call to use your abilities for His kingdom.

DENNIS

Good Morning. Have you ever wondered what God is up to in the world? I know I have. When we suffer it can be especially hard to believe that God is there. Sometimes, things can get so bad that we can feel very alone. These are the times we wish God would move in a very big way; moving mountains so that everybody would take notice. In the bible, the prophet Elijah reached a point in his life where he felt so alone and he wanted God to show up in some mighty big ways. He journeyed for a long time wanting God to prove that he was present. On top of a mountain, Elijah learned that God was present, but not in the loud earth moving ways. He was there in the silence.

Likewise, distractions want to pull us away from being still with God. We must be intentional about getting alone with Him. Henri Nouwen once said, “The discipline of solitude allows us gradually to come in touch with this hopeful peace of God in our lives, and allows us also to taste even now the beginning of the joy and peace which belong to the new heaven and new earth.”

This week we can stop running and face our bombarding thoughts by scheduling an appointment with God. I’m Dennis Gossett for Central United Methodist Church.

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:36

Computerized Christianity. Push the right buttons, enter the correct code, insert the corresponding data, and BING! Print out your own salvation.

We do our part and the Divine computer does His. No need to pray, after all we control the keyboard. No emotional attachment necessary, and worship? Well, worship is a lab exercise- insert the ritual procedures and see the results.

Religion by computer. That is what happens when we replace a living God with a cold system. When we replace love with a by-the-numbers budget. When you replace the ultimate sacrifice of Christ with the cost-effective-achievements of mankind.

And what about the personal touch, you might ask? What about a relationship with the rescuer? What about God’s family?  Leviticus 26:12 states, “I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.” That is something else entirely. That my friend is real faith!
Faith in God is so much more than applying logic and following rules. It isn’t an abstract concept that’s just for study. It is connection with Jesus on an intimate, personal level. It is emotion and spiritual as well as intellectual. It’s a live, breathing, growing thing. A thing called love.

RAY

Good Morning!

God makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matthew 5:45
Jesus told us to treat people as kindly as we can, for that emulates our heavenly Father. He waters the fields of both the righteous farmer and the ungodly landowner.

Were they wise, people everywhere would look to the sky, see the beauty of the sunrise, feel the refreshing drops of replenishing rains, and praise God for the genius of His creation.

Were they wise, atheists and skeptics would notice the brilliance of the stellar heavens and their self-evident intelligent design, and they would praise the God of the stars.

The evidence of God's goodness is everywhere to be seen. Some people are blind to it, but they're the ones most needing our kindness. Let's praise God for His power, and let's share His compassion today even with those who don't believe in it.
Can the world see Jesus in you?

SABRINA

I was recently taking Weston, our 3 year old grandson to daycare one morning when I looked down at his face before getting him down from the table.  He had breakfast burritos stuck in his hair and sticky apple juice on his chin.  Thankful I caught it, I quickly cleaned the sweet face, grabbed my purse and work, and headed out the door.  As I am about to buckle him in, I look at the sweet face, with green sticky residue all over it?  It would be from his favorite “green skittle candy” I was unaware he had grabbed out of the candy jar. A wet wipe and he is good to go!

We get to daycare and as I unbuckle him I look- he has sneezed – you know THAT story!  HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO WIPE THAT SWEET FACE??? It then occurred to me, God does the SAME thing with me! We are reminded in Matthew Chapter 11, verse 28, “Come to me all who are weary, struggling, messy, and I will give you rest, comfort you, and clean you up!”

If this morning finds you saying to your children, spouse, siblings, co-workers – “HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS??? Remember, God does the same for us, over, and over, and over again! Thank you God that you wipe us off, clean us up, and send us off, only for us to come back and you do the same thing all over again! May WE have more patience in our own lives with those around us who seem to mess up over and over and over again!

Good Morning. I’m Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor at Central United Methodist Church. In a world filled with violence and tragedy, it can be hard to see the good that surrounds us. When we are affected by bad things, it is doubly hard to imagine a good God. But no matter how well or how bad things are in life, no one will be able to understand the goodness of God. The writer of Psalm 8 noted, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human being that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?”

God is so good that he loves each and every one of us; even when the actions of other people say otherwise. God still loves us in such a way that we cannot comprehend it. A nun known as Julian of Norwich once wrote, “No created being can ever know how much God loves them. It is only with the help of his grace that we can accept the heights of his goodness.” Let us all take some time this week to allow ourselves to be alone with the One who creates, loves, and preserves. Then we will be reminded that even when we cannot see justice and mercy in the world, we still can trust in the goodness of God.

DENNIS

Good Morning. I’m Dennis Gossett, Associate Pastor at Central United Methodist Church. Are you facing a crisis in your life where you feel like giving up? It may be that no matter what you do, things are not going your way. It seems that you are facing one problem after the next. Life has a way of doing that to the very best of us.

Circumstances in our life can irritate us to the point of giving up. During these moments of my life, I am reminded that Irritation Brings Formation. Take the oyster for example. An oyster will get sand inside of its shell, which will irritate it for a long time. It will cause inflammation, infection, and other problems. But soon, the infection becomes hard and a pearl form. The affects of the irritant caused the formation of a beautiful pearl.

God tells us that for a believer, Irritation Brings Formation. One of the Old Testament Prophets understood this all too well when he wrote, “Even though the tree doesn’t bloom, the olive fails, and no herd in the stall, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.” See, the Prophet would fly to God in the days of his distress. Let God be your strength, your light, and your shield. If you trust in Him, Irritation Will Bring Formation.

Good Morning: While walking through the forest one day, a farmer found a

young eagle that had fallen out of his nest. He took it home and put it in the

barnyard with his chickens. It wasn't long before the young eagle had

learned to eat and behave like the chickens.

Finally, the farmer realized the eagle did not know how to fly. He lifted him

toward the sky and let him go. He just hopped back down to his chicken

friends and began to eat with them. The farmer took him to the roof of the

house and again tried to get him to fly, but once again he jumped down to

his chicken friends. Finally the farmer took him to the top of a high

mountain. The eagle looked around, back towards the barnyard and then up

to the sky. Slowly, he stretched his wings and soared just as he was meant to

do.

That's God's plan for us. Don't be like everyone else. Don't do the things

everyone else does. Discover God's plan for you and fly! Have a wonderful

day.

Recently in a staff meeting, our lead pastor, John Branning, prayed in his

prayer a simple sentence that has caused me to stop and reflect on several

occasions as I plan for this new school year. “Dear Lord, let us never be so

busy with the WORK of the church that we forget the LORD of it.”

I am often guilty as charged. What often starts out as an opportunity to serve

and help others to experience the love of God, becomes so bogged down in

the details and desire that things go off without error, that the original

outreach intent is lost. My human nature gets in the way of God. I often

remind CHILDREN that we are called to be the hands, feet, eyes, ears and

mouth of God, in the human form here on earth. It is a reminder for each of

us, whether in the workplace, home or church. If God is the focus of our

work here on earth, we don’t have to control the situations. Let God handle

that!  We just have to be willing servants! Have a blessed day!

“Who is like the Lord our God, Who is enthroned on high” Psalm 113:5

At FUMC Columbus, the college minister would take an annual summer

retreat to Panama City. While there, they would play on the beach, have

Bible studies & do some sort of group activity at night.

Most years, at least one of the evenings, they would go to the Gran Maze at

Coconut City with row after row of petitions, approximately shoulder high,

leading to one dead end after another. Successfully navigate the puzzle, and

you claim your freedom. Sometimes, not knowing if the left was more

promising than the path to the right indecision caused the maze runner to

freeze in uncertainty until a disembodied voice would call, “You’re going

the wrong way, back up and turn right.” Many times in life that voice has

sang like an angel in church, but never did it sound sweeter then when it

gave those directions that resulted in freedom from the maze.

Freedom was the direct result of trust. Choosing to listen to the voice

cleared the path and granted freedom. Her position on one of the

observation post above the Gran Maze gave her an advantage. She could see

what those in the maze could not. Shouldn’t we grant God the same trust

when he reaches out to clear the obstacles and traps from our path?
A person atop the 3 Foot building can see the city. A pilot’s view extends

step we need to take.

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. Jeff Spiller tells a joke about a pilot, a rocket scientist, a Boy Scout, and a priest who are all flying when the plane stalls. The pilot says: “There are four of us and we only have three parachutes. I have a family so I must survive.” He grabs a parachute and jumps out the door.

The rocket scientist grabs a chute and says: “I’m the smartest man, and it would be a great tragedy if I didn’t survive.”

The priest looked at the boy and said, “Son, I have no family. I’m prepared to meet my maker. You have your entire life ahead of you. Take the last parachute.”

The Boy Scout smiled and said: Father, don’t worry, we will both survive because you see the smartest man just jumped out of the plane wearing my knapsack on his back.”

We can all acquire lots of knowledge and intelligence throughout life. However, if we can’t answer why am I here or what is my purpose, then we may be preparing to jump into eternity with nothing more than a knapsack on our back.

Today would have been my Mother and Daddy's 60th Anniversary. I

recently heard a statement that rings so very true. "Children don't THINK

much about their parents-they EXPERIENCE them." I think that often as

parents we tend to be so busy THINKING about our children, that we do

not EXPERIENCE them. I know that as a child I could be happy with mother

and daddy or angry for what I deemed a ridiculous rule, but for the most

part my reaction was emotional. But what I did EXPERIENCE was love and

giving of their time. I did not analyze it, it was just there.

I imagine, whether good or bad, you can say the same. Young minds are not

analytical - that comes with maturity, perhaps a loss of innocence. I

encourage you today to THINK less about those close to you and

EXPERIENCE them more. There may be something you are missing! And

today may I remind you to tell those closest to you that you care for and love

them, for the time will come that you will no longer be able to experience

that blessing!  Have a blessed day!

Good Morning: Did you know that children laugh between 300 and 400

times a day, while we adults laugh only a mere 15? Believe it or not, experts

say that laughing aids digestion, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress

hormones, increases muscle flexion, boosts the immune system, triggers the

release of endorphins which are the body’s natural painkillers, heals broken

relationships and produces a general sense of well-being!

So, let's not take everything so seriously! Let's start laughing at ourselves a

little, and laughing at our enemy's attempts to keep us burdened and

oppressed! God has our victory—always!

The joy of the Lord is our strength. Share the joy! Be happy...and laugh.

Have a wonderful day.

SUZANNE

Good morning! I am Suzanne Cain, director of the Sanctuary Choir at

Central United Methodist Church. If we were to meet, it would not be long

before you would hear me singing.  While singing is in my profession, it is

also in my blood.  I am that person who bursts into random song, because

something you said reminded me of the lyrics to a song I know!
But I am also that person who believes everyone can and should sing.  The

bible teaches this in the book of songs that has been titled, Psalms!
Psalms is full of verses that say “make a joyful noise unto the Lord!” or,

“make a loud noise and rejoice,” or sing and make noise unto the Lord!”
One of the best ways to do this is through a choir at church. Let me be the

one that says, “Come sing with us!” But even if you think you can’t sing, I

encourage you to make a joyful noise unto the Lord!”

Good Morning. Have you ever done something on the spur of the moment? I have. In my younger days I was so spontaneous. I would just take off somewhere for the weekend. Often, I would end up spending money that I should not have spent, because I did not consider the cost.

This is how it can be on our spiritual journey with Jesus. We jump all in when we hear the message, but we soon give up when things get tough. Jesus tells His disciples that they must count the cost of following Him. In Luke Chapter 15, we find one of the toughest teachings from our Savior. Jesus says that His disciples must give up everything if they desire to follow Him.

Your Lord does not want you to make a hasty decision about following Him. He wants your decision to be heartfelt, deeply pondered, and considered. Christian discipleship is not for the faint of heart. At times, it will take determination and even a little elbow grease. As a matter of fact, the Apostle Paul referenced discipleship as being like an athlete; a runner, a boxer, a wrestler, etc… Count the Cost and Go All In. You won’t regret it. The world recent lost a beautiful soul at the passing of Maya Angelou. She

once said “The ship of my life may or may not be sailing on calm and

amiable seas. The challenging days of my existence may or may not be

bright and promising. Stormy or sunny days, glorious or lonely nights, I

maintain an attitude of gratitude.  If I insist on being pessimistic, there is

always tomorrow.  Today I am blessed.”
How remarkable to live a life in the blessings!  God made the same promise

to Abram as He established the Nation of Israel in Genesis 12:2 when he

said, “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and

make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing. And I will bless them

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. My wife and I enjoy going to antique malls and shows where you see different collections of items from previous generations. I always look at some of the most beautiful furniture and glassware and wonder when it was purchased originally? Was it a gift from a loved one or maybe the owner had to save for month’s to purchase it?
The stories of these items will really never be known I guess and neither will the stories of the items that we treasure. Jesus said for us not to store up a lot of “stuff” for ourselves here on earth because things can be stolen, broken and even sold off. Instead he said to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven where they will last for eternity.

I hope that today you will add one more piece to your heavenly storehouse. Maybe you will share a good word with a friend or do a kind deed for someone in need. I realize that those simple acts of kindness don’t seem that impressive but on that great day in God’s Kingdom your mansion will be filled with treasures that you placed there.

Good Morning: One day in a Bible class, the professor had a huge dartboard

drawn on the wall and lots of darts laying to the side. He told his students

to draw a picture of someone whom they disliked or someone who had

made them angry on the dart board.

The students had a grand old time throwing darts at the pictures they had

made. When they stopped, the professor pulled the dartboard down, and

there was a mangled picture of Jesus; holes and jagged marks covering his

face. He quoted Matthew 25:40: "In as much as you have done it to the least

of these my brothers, you have done it to me."

What a powerful lesson those students learned that day. When we hurt

others, talk about others, injure others in any way, we are also hurting Jesus.

Let's remember that today and build each other up instead of tearing each

other down. Have a wonderful day!

Yet You have made him a little lower than God,
And You crown him with

glory and majesty! Psalm 8:5

Are you too hard on yourself? Do you set your expectations too high? Do

you feel like you can’t do anything right?  Do you have poor I-sight?

Remember, your identity isn’t about what you do but who you are. You are

one of God’s children; created by Him with a specific purpose in mind.

When we see ourselves through His eyes, “I can’t do anything right,”

becomes “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”

Philippians 4:13.

God is greater than our shyness, our fears of inadequacy and rejection. He

desires for us to reach out to others in His name. We may not see the big

picture yet, but He is preparing to change the world through us.

To fully be sold out to God means we must discard our feelings of

insecurity and memories of past failures. We are part of the family of God

created to play a role in a holy future and God does not make mistakes.

Maybe we do not measure up to our self-imposed standards. Maybe we feel

like our daily performances are beyond pity. God doesn’t care about that, he

loves and treasures us, because He made us He has plans for us that are

beyond our imagination. If only we will trust him, love Him. Remember,

He gave His life for something precious… us!

Good Morning.
Do you remember the story of Joshua? When he fought the battle at Jericho,

he was given some unusual instructions by God in how to win the battle of

Jericho. You see Jericho had a big thick wall surrounding it. They first had

to break through that wall. God told Joshua to march around the city for 7

days. The priests were to go first, blowing their horns; then the Ark of the

Covenant carrying the 10 Commandments; then the soldiers. At the end of

the 7 days, they were all to shout.

Joshua didn’t question God’s strange instructions. He did it just as God told

him to do. And the walls came tumbling down. What can we learn from this

in the world we live in today? It is this: Even the impossible is possible

when we trust God. Have a wonderful day!

Good Morning. I’m Dennis Gossett with Central United Methodist Church. At the beginning of last month, our country celebrated July 4th and commemorated all those who gave of themselves so that we may enjoy freedom. It reminded us that freedom comes with a price. Freedom without Discipline is Destructive.

This also is the same way with the freedom found in Christ. We are free from our burdens and given rest from our labors, because Jesus has opened up a way to all people through His Sacrifice. In the Bible, we are told in Acts 13 that God does something unexpected at Antioch; He granted freedom to all people to hear and receive His word. They responded by forfeiting themselves over to God.

Irish missionary Columbanus once wrote, “Seek then the highest wisdom, not by argument in words but by the perfection of your life; not by speech but by the faith that comes from simplicity of heart.” This, dear friends, is our response to God’s offering of Freedom. So, what about you? How will you response to God’s open invitation? Will you only go half way or will you go all in.  Remember, Freedom without Discipline is Destructive.

For several months now, one of Central’s ministry focus has centered on

Community Groups. Do you have a circle of friends around you who

support you, tell you the truth, hold you accountable, pray for you? We face

daily struggles and situations that require perseverance, someone to confide

in, to give us perspective.

If you read in Exodus, Moses relied on his friends in times of turmoil,

struggles, and weariness as he lead the Israelites. In Exodus 17 as Israel was

in battle, when Moses grew tired having to hold his arm up in the air, his

friends helped him by holding his arm, bringing a rock for him to sit on -

that is what our Community Groups do - uphold each other through this

JOHN

Good Morning! I’m John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. Have you ever heard the old fable of the frog that got cooked? According to the legend, someone wanted to cook a frog. But each time the frog was dropped into a pan of hot water, it jumped out. Then the cook got smart.  She placed the frog in warm water. The frog relaxed. Then gradually, the cook turned up the temperature of the stove. In fact, it happened so gradually that the frog never bothered to jump out and the frog got cooked.

Most people in some way or another have spiritual values. These values guide us in the decisions that we make and the way that we express God’s love to others. However, with all the struggles of life and the temptations that attack us, it is easy to allow our spiritual values to quickly become secular values.

I hope that you have a faith family - A community to call your own. If not, then let me offer Central United Methodist an option; because if we are not careful, our spiritual values can get cooked like that frog.

SUZANNE

I have had the privilege in my life of traveling around the world.  My father

was an officer in the United States Air Force, and every place we were

stationed became home.

As an adult being married to a youth pastor, we have made home the

different places where we served churches.
For the last ten years, Meridian has been our home.
Having known many different people in my life has made me the person I

am today, but no matter where I have lived, the constant has been Jesus

Christ.  He is my present and future “home.”

Regardless of where you are in your life, whether wandering or stable, Jesus

is there for you, calling you home. If it has been a while since you attended

church, I encourage you to go. If you don’t have a church home, I encourage

you to find one. If you are looking for a place to call home, join us at Central

United Methodist Church, but regardless of your place of worship, know

that Jesus is your HOME.
