BOB PEDEN

One day this week, I discovered my printer would only print black and white. I tried to print a document that had all the titles in a gray border. I tried three times, and every time I got all the black and white but none of the gray. I know that by now some of you have figured out that my color cartridge was out. Correct, though I still cannot figure out why you need a color cartridge for gray.

This experience also reminded me that this is how some people think Christianity is. There are people who think that is what the Bible is - a list of rules, everything being black and white.  This is not Christianity. The Bible is not a list of rules. But Jesus does ask us to live a lifestyle that is different from the world around us. A lifestyle motivated by love. Love for God. Love for one another. And a commitment to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

This is Bob Peden of Central United Methodist Church. Will you love and serve Him?

GLENDA

Good Morning:

A few years ago, my husband was supposed to lead a group to South America for fun.  Instead, he had an emergency surgery, which kept him at home.

He was disappointed that he didn't make the trip, but as it turned out, this was a time that God intervened and kept him safe.  The trip was a nightmare for those who went.  As the group was taking a boat trip down the Amazon River, bandits boarded the boat, seized control, threw one man overboard, smashed all the life boats, destroyed all radio equipment, robbed all Americans on board, and left the passengers and crew stranded.  My husband, although in a hospital bed, was safe.

We don't always understand when obstacles are thrown in our way, but God is always in control.

After this experience, we can understand why Samuel said the following:  “The God of my rock; in him will I trust; he is my shield, my high tower, and my refuge, my Savior; thou savest me from violence.”

Today, put your trust in God.  Have a wonderful day!

RAMBO

Hi!  I'm Bob Rambo, Lead Pastor at Central United Methodist Church.  For the past year, I've been part of the “Leadership Lauderdale” program - an opportunity to spend a year learning about our community, our county, and how we can be part of improving life here.

We've had outstanding leadership in this event - and a few weeks ago, we had our FINAL session.  One of the speakers talked with us about the difference between a MANAGER and a LEADER.  He said:
a MANAGER is someone who does things RIGHT
a LEADER is someone who does the RIGHT thing

Those words spoke to me.  Often we focus on “doing things RIGHT” - but how often do we ponder what it means to “do the RIGHT thing”?

Jesus often clashed with people who were preoccupied with doing things “right” - but he was constantly encouraging people to put their trust in God and do the “right” thing.

Today - I pray that I [and you] will do the RIGHT things.

Make it a GREAT day!

Good Morning!

On May 26, 1942, these words were broadcasted over Radio Tokyo.  “The British and American fleets cannot appear on the oceans.  The Japanese people can look forward to a triumphant march into London and a victory march in New York.”

How different the world would be today if the other side had gained the victory in World War II.  The prayers of thousands of God's people contributed to the Allied victory.

Today is Memorial Day.  I hope you will join me in thanking God for all the brave men and women who have given their lives that we may be free and safe.  Young U.S. military personnel die every day in an effort to make the world a better place to live.  You are free to pray for them if you wish.

GOOD MORNING!

As the opening day of baseball season fast approaches, I am reminded of when

Cleveland Indians outfielder, Melvin Hall, got too caught up in a 1986 spring training game. Hall was chasing a long drive when suddenly he was stopped dead in his tracks. A wire fence had snared his jersey and he couldn't break free! Hung up on the outfield fence all Mel could do was watch helplessly as the Oakland Athletics' Carney Lansford circled the bases for an inside the park home run.

Do you ever feel like life has you caught up and helpless? If so, let me encourage you to visit the “House that God built” this Sunday to find the answers to all life's entanglements.

Good Morning!

Every act we perform helps or hinders the progress of the world by just so much.  Our actions or decisions may not be the final determining factor, but what we do or say does add weight to one side or the other.

The final blow of the hammer can sever a rock only because of the countless blows that have gone before.  Each hammer blow, each thing we do or fail to do counts and helps to determine the final outcome.

Think with me for a moment.   What are you dealing with in your life at this time?  Are your words and actions helping or hindering the situation?

Psalm 19:14 states:  May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Good Morning:

School is ending this week for most children and teachers in and around Meridian.  For teachers, it will give us a time to regroup, to make plans, to look forward to the next school year.  For the children, it will be a time of rejoicing, looking forward to the summer break, and finding time on their hands.

As a parent, you can help.  Be involved with your children.  Know where they are and who they are with.  Know their plans and help them make right choices.  Tell them you love them each and every day.  Be present in their lives.  After-all, they are a present to you, a gift from God.

Have a wonderful day!

Somewhere a woman wakes this morning bruised and battered. Afraid to leave her abusive husband - afraid to stay.

Somewhere a man wakes up this morning with a terrible hangover from another night of senseless drinking.

Somewhere a child wakes up hungry, homeless, abandoned. A hopeless, helpless heap on the ground, unseen, unheard, unwanted, unloved.

But, I have good news! God's not tired. God is not tired of us -  for God sees, God hears, God desires, God loves and God sends us to answer prayers.

God who loves and holds each and every one of us deep in his heart.  God, the creator of the universe hears their desperate prayers and you are his Plan A as an answer to prayer.

This is Bob Peden of Central United Methodist Church, You and I are God's agent of hope. Will you allow God to use you to answer prayer.

RAMBO

Hi!  I'm Bob Rambo, Lead Pastor at Central United Methodist Church.  This weekend is Memorial Day weekend; Monday is Memorial Day.  It's the day our nation remembers our fallen soldiers.

From the beginning of our nation's history, freedom has been won and maintained, because of the sacrifice of those who fought to keep us free.  Many of those who fought made the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE of their lives.  I encourage you this weekend to pause for a moment of gratitude for those who serve our country and especially for those who have given their lives for us.

The theme of sacrificial giving is very prominent in the Bible.  In the Old Testament, Jewish priests slaughtered animals to atone for the sins of the Israelites.  In the New Testament, Jesus dies on the cross, making the ultimate sacrifice of his life for the sins of the whole world.

On Memorial Day, we remember our fallen soldiers; but every day, we are invited to live as followers of Jesus, who gave his life for us.

Make it a great day!

Hi!  I'm Bob Rambo, Lead Pastor at Central United Methodist Church.  In a few days the Memorial Day weekend will be upon us - the unofficial beginning of summer.

With summer, school [for many] is out; people travel and take vacations. During summer we “shift gears” a little bit.  Things relax and the rhythm of life slows down just a tad.  The cycle of life changes yet again.

But one thing is certain - even in time of change, none of us can go long without a healthy relationship with God.  So during the summer months, don't forget to worship.  Don't forget to pray.  Don't forget to listen for God by reading Scripture each day.  While our bodies and minds benefit from a change of pace - our spirits need God's constant presence.

So this summer - make sure you make a place in your life each day for God.

Make it a GREAT day!

In Psalm 74, David cries out…“We no longer see your miraculous signs. All the prophets are gone, and no one can tell us when it will end.”

I think that probably just about everyone in Meridian knows that just a few weeks ago during Sunday School at Central one of our own members collapsed…no heart beat, no pulse…for far too long to survive…but she did. We witnessed a TRUE miracle…one we will not forget…ever.

In today's world we want everything explained in a well-understood scientific fashion.  This could not be scientifically explained.  We tend to want reason and logic.

When miracles happen all around us we tend to want them logically explained. But…You and I are miracles.  The people God places to be in our lives…in the right place…at the right time…are miracles…Granted, many of us were blessed to witness a breath-taking miracle…but never doubt…God's presence, God's miracles are here every day…before us…we just have to open our eyes and our hearts…God is, indeed still in the business of miracles!  Have a blessed day!

“You make me want to be a better man.”

That is what the character, played by Jack Nicholson, told his love interest in the movie, “As Good As It Gets.”  Listen to these words from a poem entitled, “Love” by an unknown author:

I love you, not only for what you are,

But for what I am when I'm with you.

I love you, not only for what

You have made of yourself, but for what

You are making of me.

I love you because you are helping me

To make of the lumber of my life,

Not a tavern but a temple.

I pray that you have someone in your life who helps you become all that God has created you to be.  But remember, the most fulfilling life is a life of service to others.  Decide today that you are going to help someone build a temple of their life and God will bless you!

GOOD MORNING!

A man pulls up to a country store on the outskirts of town, hops out of his car and asks the old man sitting out front,” How are the people in this town, old man?"

The old man looked at the stranger and asked,” How were the people in the town you just left?"  The man looked at him with a puzzled expression and replied,” They were mean and hateful, hard to work and live with.  We were glad to get out of that stinking place." The old man nodded replied,” Well, that's how you'll find the people in this town."

A while later another car pulls up and a man gets out and says,” Excuse me sir, but how are the people in this town?" The old man looked at the man saying," How were the people in the town you just left?"  The stranger smiled and answered,” They were warm-hearted and kind, always willing to help.  We hated to leave."  The old man nodded replying,” That's how you'll find the people in this town."

This echoes Luke 6:31, “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”

A change of surrounding will do nothing to change our problems unless we are willing to first change ourselves.

BOB PEDEN

The story is told of a little girl who was late coming home for supper one evening. When she got home her parents were understandably upset.  They questioned her about why she had been so late, after all they had worried about her!

The little girl said, "I stopped to help Marcie, she had a wreck on her bicycle and it was broken."

Her father said, "But you don't know anything about fixing bicycles!"  To which the little girl replied, "I know, but I stopped to help her cry."

Now you may or may not know anything about fixing bicycles, or cars, or washing machines, or refrigerators or much of anything else.  But when friends have broken things in their lives and are in despair, we can help them with that!  The truth is that we are rarely in the position of being able to fix the brokenness of someone's life, but we can help them cry about it.

You and I can encourage them and help them through the hard times in life!

GOOD MORNING!

There was a hound dog laying in the yard and an old man in overalls was sitting on the porch when a man from the city pulled up in the yard.  ''Excuse me, sir, but does your dog bite?'' the city man asked.  The old man looked up over his newspaper and replied, ''Nope.''  As soon as the man stepped out of his car, the dog began snarling and growling, and then attacked both his arms and legs.

As the city slicker flailed around in the dust, he yelled, ''I thought you said your dog didn't bite!'' The old man muttered, '' That ain't my dog.''

Do you ever feel like you're getting the wrong answers to your questions or perhaps that you're asking the wrong questions in life?  More often than not, it isn't what we ask but who we ask that leads to confusion.

Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Looking for the answers to life's questions? He can help!  Join us in worship this Sunday morning at our 8:30 am contemporary service or our 10:55 am traditional service.

Hi!  I'm Bob Rambo, Lead Pastor at Central United Methodist Church.  This Sunday is Mother's Day, a day when we pause to remember and give thanks for our mothers.  This holiday came into being by a woman who wanted a way to show her gratitude for her mother and the mothers in her local church.  It soon became a national holiday.

I remember many years ago the late great Bear Bryant doing a commercial for the old Bell South phone company.  It aired each year around Mother's Day; in that distinctive “growl” he was famous for, Bear encouraged people to call home on Mother's Day.  He ended by saying “I wish I could call MY mama.”

Many of us can't call our mothers this Mother's Day.  But we CAN give thanks for them and LIVE in a way that would honor them.  And those of us who CAN call our mothers can CALL them AND honor our mothers in a way that would make them proud.

This Mother's Day - remember and give thanks for the mothers who have given us life and shaped us.

Make it a GREAT day.

Good Morning!

Dr. Alexander Whyte tells the story of a man who dreamed that he saw Jesus tied to a whipping post and a soldier was scourging Him.  He saw the whip in the soldier's hand, with its thick lashes, studded here and there with bits of lead, which were intended to cut into the flesh.

As the soldier brought the whip down on the bare shoulders of Jesus, the dreamer shuddered as he saw the marks and bloodstains it left behind.  When the soldier raised his hand to strike again, the dreamer rushed forward, intending to stop him.  As he did so, the soldier turned around and the dreamer recognized himself.

We often think how cruel those men must have been who scourged and crucified Jesus.  But whenever we do wrong, we, too, cause the heart of Jesus to bleed with sorrow and pain.  Remember, whoever you are, Jesus loves you!

I was singing in an Easter choir once, and a man asked me why the song said Jesus died on a tree. I was so eager to impress, I gave him a long, seminary-type answer about crucifixion methods in first-century Palestine.  He listened to me go on, then said, “Oh, I just thought maybe they used the word 'tree' because it rhymed.”

A lot of folks think closeness to God means knowing all the right answers.  But I don't agree.  I think closeness to God begins the night we toss and turn in bed, realizing we don't know it all.  Look at the Bible. Some of its finest saints were long on questions:  Job on his ash heap, the disciples asking Jesus to teach them to pray, Nicodemus grilling Jesus late into the night, even Jesus on the cross.

Having spent much of my life showing off my smarts, I nearly choke on the words “I don't know.”  Still, I suspect those words might be the kingdom keys.  What it boils down to is that God doesn't care so much whether or not we have all the right answers.  Just right hearts.

Have you ever volunteered to help someone with a project…and then as time progresses, you are suddenly told you are not doing it correctly, not in the way the person you are helping thinks it should be done?  Why did they ask for help in the first place???

Do you ever think about the fact that we do God exactly the same way?  We ask for His help in our lives, then want to continue to be in control of the situation.  We cry out to God…then wrestle the control from him...particularly if we do not feel that God's presence in our lives is working out the way WE planned.

Isaiah 26:3-4 reminds us…”You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.  Trust in the Lord forever.”

Don't miss God's peace in your life.  Place your trust, comfort and peace in God…then let go…it is a wonderful feeling to not always have to be in control.

Good Morning!

The headline read:  No End to Cycle of Revenge in Mideast.  In the wake of suicide bombings and military retaliation, the article told of a 28-year-old man consumed with avenging his uncle's death.  “When someone dear to you is killed,” he said, “you can't sleep; you have to have revenge.”  But, after killing two men, he considered enemies; he still had no satisfaction or peace.

No one wins by trying to even the score.  Revenge is a weapon of such devastating power that God alone can handle it.  God says, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.”  The weapon God has entrusted to us is kindness.  If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink.  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.  If needed, use the justice system, not revenge.

Good Morning:

We surely do hear a lot of bad news these days. We feel the bad news. We live the bad news. There are a lot of very unhappy people all around us. But that is not God's plan for us. God wants us to be happy right where we are. And we can be. Try this. Each day count your blessings (we all are blessed although, we sometimes forget that fact).

When counting your blessings becomes part of your daily routine, you will find that your attitude toward life will change. You will also find yourself becoming more positive, gracious, loving, and humble, and will then find yourself singing praises to our Heavenly Father as well! As King David said, “Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.” Have a wonderful day.

Today we, as a nation are called to pray.  The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage.  Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history.

In 1863 President Lincoln called for a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer.”  In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer.

In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.

This day has great significance for us as a nation.  It enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions.  It stands as a call to us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people.  Take time today to pray for our nation, our freedom, our leaders, and for discernment…to be the country living in a way that is pleasing to God.  Take time to thank God for the bountiful blessings he has bestowed upon this nation…one nation…under God.

BOB PEDEN

Good morning.  Faith is the tenacity that believes when believing isn't easy and circumstances are hard.

Unfortunately, we often approach faith as something fully accomplished and mature or it is not true faith.  We ask ourselves, "How can I believe when I still have some doubts?" Yet, in the real world in which Jesus lived, faith was challenging, hard, dangerous, and always in process.

In the 9th Chapter of Mark, we are told of and encounter between Jesus and a man desperate for healing of his son. Jesus assures him that everything is possible for one who believes.  In a sudden burst of honesty the man replies,“I do believe, help my unbelief.”

Isn't that how we often feel?  We do trust Jesus, yet we hold out doubts.

This is Bob Peden of Central United Methodist Church.  My prayer for you and for me today is, “Lord, help our unbelief.”
