BOB

This is Bob Peden of Central, a United Methodist Community here in

Meridian. It has been 10 years since Hurricane Katrina roared ashore,

destroying much of the central gulf coast.

Mississippi’s coast had always been known for its beautiful live oak trees.

Katrina uprooted some, but killed many more by inundating them with salt

water, and stripping them of leaves and branches.

Following the storm, the highway department cleared many of these trees,

but left some trunks standing. Then "chainsaw artist" Dayton Scoggins

turned the still standing trunks into the beautiful works of art you see here.

In the same way, God can work in our lives to transform the disasters we

encounter, into lives that serve to glorify him.

Just as Dayton Scoggins didn’t send Katrina to the gulf coast to give him

wood to work, God doesn’t send us disasters so that he can recover our lives.

But make no mistake, God can transform the worst the world has to dish out

into a beautiful work of life, if we will only allow Him to do so.

A poet once described friends as “the sunshine of life.” We all know the day

is brighter when sharing with friends.  Enjoying fellowship is one of life’s

sweetest joys. We NEED friends-friends with whom we not only laugh, but

share our secrets, fears, and sorrows. The best and worst times in life are

made a thousand times better when shared with friends.

When we reach out to others, they reach out to us. It is a two way street.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 reminds us “two are better than one. For if they fall, one will

lift up his companion.”

At Central, we are about God and spiritual growth, AND friendship and

community. Remember, JESUS showed us the importance of close friends,

through His disciples. They shared joy and sorrow. We would love to have

you as a part of our community. Worship on Sundays is at 8:30, 9:45, and

10:55. We offer Sunday School, Small Groups, Mission opportunities for ALL

ages. We even sometimes meet just for fun and fellowship.

I invite you to visit our website for more info. If you are in need of a friend,

we are the place to be!

My mother has often joked that my refrigerator is the place where food goes

to die. Somehow a container of sour cream or leftovers gets shoved to the

back of the fridge and forgotten. I’m sure it has happened at your house also.

Something that was once good has become ugly.

Our lives can have the same occurrence. Maybe it’s “our Pew” at church or

“our parking place.” Something that isn’t necessarily innately bad, but if we

hurt feelings or ignore a guest because of the way WE like things, it can

become sin.

Take a moment this morning, take stock of your spiritual fridge, and see if

it’s time to do some “cleaning out.”

KRISTINA

Good Morning!

I am Kristina Crabtree and I am the Pastor of Mission and Evangelism at

Central UMC.

My husband and I were finishing up school and allowed our little girl, Dani,

to stay with her memaw while we finished strong. Oh the separation sadness

I felt in my heart the whole time we were apart. But the day came when we

were connected again. My heart was instantly filled with joy!

As I was rocking her to sleep that night for the first time in a long time, it

was as if our heart united again. She was at ease by the sound of my voice

singing to her. But as I was rocking her a thought came to mind. “God must

have felt this way when Jesus had returned to heaven.” And vise versa,

“Jesus must have felt the connection to his Father once his mission was

completed.

Even though I was connection again with Dani, some of you might not be

physically connected to someone that you love dearly. I encourage you during

this time that one day you will be connected again in joy. But think of it in a

bigger picture, when you meet God face-to-face, you and He will be

connected forever.

Good Morning: When was the last time you thought about the 10

commandments? It's been a while, I'll bet. We're in the process of teaching

our elementary children the 10 commandments at church. Personally, I think

if every child in every household were taught the 10 commandments the

world would be a much better place. It's only 10 things to remember...like

There is only one God; thou shalt not worship false idols; thou shalt not use

the Lord's name in vain; thou shalt not commit adultery; thou shalt not steal;

thou shalt not bear false witness; thou shalt not murder; honor your father

and your mother; keep the Sabbath day Holy; and thou shalt not covet.

Oh, yes, Jesus added one more: love your neighbor as yourself. See what I

mean? If we all just followed these simple rules, we could get rid of a lot of

problems. Think on this and have a wonderful day.

The Psalms are alive

Good morning! My name is Jonathan Crabtree, and I’m the Pastor for Student

Ministry at Central United Methodist Church in downtown Meridian.

Actress Julie Andrews sings how the “hills are alive with the sound of

music” in the 1965 American classic, “The Sound of Music.” Through the

story, she works with the seven children in teaching them the prevalence of

music. Thus, we hear the songs’ lyrics: “The hills are alive with the sound of

music.”

When I served as Chaplain Intern at University of Kentucky Hospital in

Lexington, Kentucky, I concluded a similar phrase like Julie Andrews. “The

Psalms are alive in your life and mine.” As I walked through the hospital,

and as I sat with several families in pain and grief, I was reminded of the

Psalms because of the common phrase of asking “Why?” The Psalms are

prayers, songs, testimonies, and words of inquiry. Do you ask, “Why?” when

life seems to not be going according to plan? Because, it’s ok to ask “why.”

How are the Psalms alive in your own life?

RAY

Good Morning!

Medical research has discovered your heart health and mental health may

depend on your ability to reduce hurt and anger by forgiving others and

forgiving yourself.

The Lord commands us to forgive one another when we’re wronged or when

we do others wrong.

We as humans can forgive others, although we’re not capable of completely

erasing the bad memory from our brain.

It’s a lot easier to forgive others than it is to forgive ourselves because, after

all, they don’t live in our head, always reading us the same old riot act about

the wrong we committed.

These wonderful forgiveness instructions have been in our Bible for a long,

long time.  Eph 43-25 tells us, “I alone am He who blots away your sins for

my own sake and will never think of them again.”

How tempting it is to remind someone of a past offense!  But when God

forgives our sins He totally forgets them. Thank you Lord!  Have a great day.

The other morning
as I stumbled into the kitchen to make my first cup of coffee for the day, I

heard a cricket chirping right by the den door. Opening the door to
try to locate where exactly the sound was coming from, I was struck by the

stillness of morning, dew on the ground and the sounds of wildlife

beginning
to stir.

Genesis 1:5 came to my mind. “And there was evening and there was

morning -
the first day...” The first day...So many days have come and gone since that

first day, yet each morning begins with the same still quiet miracles of

creation.

We, in our insistence to jump out of
bed and begin our lists of things that have to be done, forget the simple daily
miracle of the sunrise, the creation of new life right outside our backdoor.

I invite you to rise a little earlier one morning this week, and watch and

listen to a miracle unfold...the miracle of a new day...and Be still and know

that the God who created the universe, is your God. Go and have a blessed

day.

DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett with Central United Methodist Church.

The miracle of growth is something pretty astonishing. Just think about a

small seed that is put into the cold dark ground. With proper care, that seed

sprouts and a tiny green stalk fights its way to the surface. In the Gospels,

Jesus often referred to faith as being like a seed. It can start out very small, as

if it is barely hanging on. Like when we barely have enough faith to believe.

But soon, that faith carries us through those difficult times. We are like that

tiny stalk that fights its way to the surface.

As nature shows, once that stalk breaks the surface it doesn’t stop there. It

gets bigger and bigger, as now it fights its way toward the sky. The sun and

rain gives it growth, until it bares its own fruit. Faith in Jesus Christ gives us

such growth in our spiritual and physical lives. If you feel, as if your seed has

grown dormant, don’t give up. Be patient and soon growth will occur. If you

feel that you have reached the surface, but you are not growing. Do not worry

keep reaching upward. I invite you to come to Central where we are always

praying that the Son of God and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit will give

us renewed strength and growth for the days ahead. God bless.

BOB

This is Bob Peden of Central, a United Methodist Community in Meridian. I

remember it like yesterday. A night 46 years ago today. A night totally black

but for the strikes of lightning. The only sound was that of rushing wind,

overcome only by the even louder sound of tornados passing nearby.

In the aftermath as the coast recovered from the effects of Hurricane Camille,

many thought they had experienced the worst the gulf could dish out. But 26

years later Katrina cut a much larger swath through the coast and proved

them wrong.

The residents of the Mississippi gulf coast have rebuilt after each of these

storms. Not forgetting what was, but not merely recreating the old, they built

a new future each time. So it is with our lives. When disaster comes - storms,

the death of loved ones, the loss of relationships, jobs, possessions - we

should not just rebuild what was, but looking to the future God has for us,

we build new lives that if we allow God, He will prove to us are even better

than what was before.

I pray that we will allow God to work in us, and in the good times and the

disasters of our lives.

Good Morning: When we first learned to walk, we often fell down, but did

we stay down? No, we reached out to the extended hand of our mother or

father, who helped us back on our feet. This happened over and over again

until we finally learned to walk on our own.

We should learn to walk with our Heavenly Father's helping hand the very

same way. When we find ourselves falling or feeling down and discouraged,

we can reach out to God through prayer, and accept his merciful helping

hand.

Now, have a great day knowing that the loving hand of God is always there

ready to help you, no matter what you may face.

BOB

This is Bob Peden of Central, a United Methodist Community in Meridian.

Pray for all people, everywhere. The Good news is that God wants everyone

to be saved. Not just people in this country or that one. Not just people who

look like me or don't look like me. Not just the rich or the poor or the

educated or the simple.

God wants everyone to be saved. Jesus says in the gospel of John, “For God

so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes

in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to

save the world through him.”

God wants everyone to be saved. Not everyone will be saved, at least not

according to the Bible. But that's not because God wants anyone to be lost.

It's just that some will refuse to believe.

So let me tell you these simple facts: God loves you. And he wants you to be

saved. Do you want the same?

RAY

Good Morning!

All throughout history, man (you and I) have fallen short, messed up and

sinned.  But, the good news is; God's grace has provided us with a savior,

Jesus, who died for our sins.  Our sins are forgiven and forgotten when we

accept Him into our hearts.  God does not base His love for us upon our acts

or "goodness" although we should live with the intent to honor Him every

day with our actions.
Did you Know:
Elijah was suicidal
Joseph was abused
Job was bankrupt
Gideon was afraid
Paul was a mass murderer
Moses had a speech problem
Jonah was a coward
Noah was a drunk
Peter was a liar
God still used them to do amazing things.
Still think you're too messed up for Him to use you?  God specializes in

using broken people to do powerful things.  Are you flawed???  GOD CAN

USE YOU!  Have a good day.

If someone says “Don’t tell anyone what you’ve seen”, what is your first

reaction?

Several times in the book of Mark, these are Jesus’ instructions to people that

He has healed. In Chapter 5, it’s after healing Jarius’ daughter, where He

gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this.

In Chapter 7, it is a deaf mute, and even though Jesus commanded them not

to tell anyone, the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.

Back in Chapter 3, Jesus gave strict orders to the demons who cried out “You

are the Son of God,” Not to tell who he was.

Throughout Mark’s gospel Jesus encourages people not to tell who He was.

Each time, more and more people came to know Jesus, the Christ.  So maybe,

if I tell you NOT to tell anyone about what God has done for you, the Spirit

will bubble up inside you, and you will be unable to remain silent! May you

be blessed today.

How do you rest? Exodus 20:8

Good morning! My name is Jonathan Crabtree. I’m the Pastor for Student

Ministry at Central United Methodist Church in downtown Meridian. Do

you rest? I mean do you truly take a 24 hour period of rest?

In a culture that promotes constant and instant interactions, this actually may

be unheard of, but God’s Word to Moses in Exodus chapter 20 verse 8 says

something different. It’s a part of the Ten Commandments. “Remember the

Sabbath and keep it holy.” This commandment is the only of its’ kind

because the first three are commandments in loving God, while the final six

are about loving people. The only way to best love God and other is through

a proper understanding of Sabbath, or “rest.”

In resting once a week, we are able to reflect on our previous week, and look

forward to the coming one. But, we have to stop, and rest. Put down the

technology, sign out of social media, turn off the TV, and rest by joining

others in worship of God. Jesus tells us that Sabbath was made for humanity

and not humanity for Sabbath. So, do you rest?

KRISTINA

Good Morning!

I am Kristina Crabtree and I am the Pastor of Mission and Evangelism at

Central UMC.

Have you ever found yourself, as a Christian, asking the questions, “Where

am I as a Christian, do I love God more now than I did years ago? I find

myself categorizing my spiritual life as if it is something to be measured.

Our society nowadays puts so much pressure on progress in family life, job

success, or even how many pew seats are filled each Sunday.

Oh how easily our spiritual journey with God can become performance

driven. When our spiritual journey starts becoming self-driven, we are

putting limitations to where we have been and where we are going. I

encourage you not to think of your spiritual journey as if you are taking steps

to becoming “a perfect Christian” but think of your journey as a

“movement.” A movement that takes our spiritual categorizing to our heart,

the core meaning to who we are.

I encourage you and challenge you to be involved in your local church or if

you do not have a local church, we would love to journey alongside of you in

your spiritual journey.

BOB

This is Bob Peden of Central, a United Methodist Community in Meridian.

Much is made of revisionist history these days. The funny thing is when we

retell history, it always makes us look smarter, better, moral, right. But the

truth is there is only one who can revise history and His name in Jesus. And

here is how he makes your past different:
The blood of Jesus takes away the guilt of your sin. It is as if it never

happened.

Life in Jesus helps you to manage the consequences of your sin.

Relationships can be healed, your mess can become your message, and joy,

peace, hope, and purpose can be yours.
Jesus changes you. You can become a different person than you have been.

God’s forgiveness, following Jesus, and the work of the Holy Spirit can make

you into a new person.

If you would like to revise your past, contact me. My email address and

phone number are on the screen. I can share how Jesus did that for me and

countless others. And I can help you see how he can do that for you.

This week marks the beginning of a new school year for most.
Whether you or a teacher or a student,

it’s always scary to start a new school year because you just don’t know what

you are getting.
If you are a teacher, a nice group of children can make for an awesome year;

one or two extreme behavior problems can be enough to run you down and

ruin your attitude from now until June.

If you are a student, you may have just found out that you have the “dreaded

teacher” and already see the handwriting on the wall.

Whether you are a student or teacher, let me encourage you to begin the year

with a fresh start with your attitude.  Don’t let comments from others taint

your view of your teachers or your students.

When you are tempted to complain, ask God to give you a positive attitude

and stay focused on seeing this year as part of His divine plan. God will give

you all the strength you need to fulfill His purpose for your life and the lives

of others around you. As for our community, let us remember our students

AND teachers, not just today, but throughout our school year!

DENNIS

Good Morning. I am Dennis Gossett with Central United Methodist Church.

In the dog days of summer our electric bill can get pretty expensive. The air

conditioner is always running, and with the kids being home, every light in

the house is on. If you are like me, we are constantly turning lights off in

every room. After all, who has money to burn? However, when it is dark, it’s

necessary to have light if you want to see. It would seem rather silly to hide

light bulbs from ourselves if we really need to see in a dark room. But

sometimes that is what we do with our faith.

Did you know that Jesus is the light of the world? He said that light can

come and live inside of each of us. So, if we have that light, we should not

put it in some place that we cannot see it. Imagine, if we were to hide the

lights in our home not only could we not see but others who are in the house

would be blind too.

Jesus let this light shine for the whole world to see. The light he is referring

to is love, compassion, mercy, grace, faith, obedience, and sacrifice. Such

things should be placed in its proper place. I encourage you to shine your

light today. Let other people see by your example. Also, I invite you to come

worship with us, as we kindle the light of the world in our hearts. God bless.

Good Morning: Irving Berlin was born in Russia. He didn't remember much

about those years except watching his home burn to the ground and then his

family fleeing the country.

By the age of 8, his family had made their way to America. His father died,

and he had to drop out of school and help with family finances by delivering

papers. Despite all those setbacks, he became one of the most famous

songwriters of all times.......a lot of them patriotic.....because, you see, he

knew how great America was.

“God Bless America”, written in 1938, was an expression of his feelings

toward the country to which he owed all that he had and all that he was. He

also knew this country would not be great without God's blessings. Today

we need God more than ever. As you pray each day, ask that God would bless

America again. Have a wonderful day!

Good Morning!, How are you doing?, Howdy!, What’s up?

Perhaps you might nod your head, or if you are driving down the road, you

might lift your hand from the steering wheel in order to wave to someone.

There are many ways that we greet people, but rarely are they as enthusiastic

as the Apostle Paul. Look for instance at the Second Letter to the Corinthians

: “To the church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints, Grace and

Peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Allow me to encourage you to greet those around you.  Let a simple heartfelt

“hello!” be a measure of love that you share with others.  And, if you are so

inclined, share Paul’s energetic Corinthian greeting. Either way, share the

Grace and Peace of God with others. And have a great day!
