Good Morning!

I came in from work rather late last night, and my wife was in the middle of painting our bathroom. She was doing a fabulous job, but I noticed she was sweating profusely and it couldn't have been more than 72 degrees in the house. Upon further inspection of the situation, I noticed she was wearing her favorite goose down coat with a raincoat over it. “Dear you are burning up!” I exclaimed, “Why in the world are you wearing two heavy coats to do manual labor during the summer even if you are inside?”

She paused for a moment and then replied, “Well if you will read the label rather than being so quick to criticize, you will see, it plainly states that it works best if you 'put on two coats!”

Sometimes the Bible comes across that way to me. It's written plainly in black and white, but somehow I get confused in the translation or the application to my life. That is one of the reasons God encourages us to fellowship with others so that we can help one another with the translation and application of God's word to our lives. If you don't have a church home already, let me encourage you to give us a visit at Central, you'll be glad you did!

Good Morning:

Today is my oldest daughter's birthday. We had a name picked out for her before she was born, but when I saw her tiny face, I knew it was not for her. So we named her Tiffanie Nicole Thomas. Turns out it was a perfect fit. Her initials spell out TNT. And she was a regular little fireball.

Names are important. They can define who we are or influence what we become. The most important name we could have, however, is “Christian.” It says that we are followers of Jesus Christ. When we are known as Christian, then people should see Christ in us. It's not easy being a Christian, for Jesus was perfect and we are far from it. But as a Christian, we should strive each day to be more and more like him.

Do people see Christ in you? I hope so. Have a wonderful day and Happy Birthday, Tiffanie!

The word character comes from a Greek term describing an engraving tool. Our character, like that of an engraving tool is etched as a set of distinctive marks, drawing a picture of who we really are. Everyone has character...whether good, bad, sturdy or shady. Have you ever seen river rocks, shaped by water and wind? No single wave, or burst of wind shaped the rock. It was a repeated force. So it is with us. Everything we do, every thought, choice - good or bad, is a wave with ripple effects.

It is never easy to see the immediate effect. It is in the consequence that follows. It forms the core of our character. With every decision a groove is cut. Our reaction in every crisis, cruelty temptation, cuts a pattern in our character. It is in those moments of decision your destiny is shaped.

How is your character? If it needs some carving out, help is only a prayer away. God can change what we never could on our own. We only have to ask.

JOHN BRANNING

Good Morning! I'm John Branning, Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. In 2007, the US Army found its supply of Chaplains depleting due to a rapid deployment cycle and retirements. The Mississippi Army National Guard was no exception and was at 50 percent strength that same year. They issued a call for clergy to fill in the gap and to care for the souls of Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen.

As the Father of three sons, I could only imagine if they were ever called to defend this Nation, who would go with them and remind them of God's love in the midst of uncertainty. That emotion prompted me to volunteer and serve as a Chaplain in the Army National Guard. I deployed in 2010 to Iraq with the 1-185th Army Aviation Battalion for one year. I know what it is like to lay your head down in a combat zone, and I know the price that our Military pays for us each day. I ask you to pray for them and always thank them for serving us and sacrificing for our freedom.

Think before you

speak! The Bible has quite a bit to say about how we use our words. In Eph. 4:29, we're told, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up ..."

We need to be aware of how powerful our words can be.  Once spoken, they can never be taken back. The old saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is simply not true! Unkind words hurt deeply, and may even destroy someone's self esteem for life!

The Bible is filled with stories of people who God sustained through His words of encouragement. How we speak - reflects Christ's character within us. Be generous with words of encouragement. When tempted to give an angered response, stop and ask yourself, "What would Jesus say?" God will give us the victory.

BOB

This is Bob Peden of Central United Methodist Church. God has called you and I to work together in building His church. There are tasks and roles for each of us to fulfill which build up the church, the body of Christ. But we need to be careful that we do not allow our love for God's church to supplant our love for God, for when we do, we turn God's church into our church. The church of God becomes the church of we or even the church of me.

The church is not intended to be about fulfilling my needs and my wants. The church is not intended to help me live a better, richer life. The church is intended to spread the Kingdom of God and to fulfill God's desire to care for the needs of the least and lost. Be careful lest your love for God gets supplanted by your love for your church. God has given us labor in His kingdom. Don't let the love of His work replace Love for Him.

Having recently observed the 8th anniversary of hurricane Katrina, I am reminded of a

women's conference I attended in Gulfport 3 years later. This meeting was the first gathering of this group since Katrina. The speaker reflected on the journey of their church. Heavily damaged, left with nothing but outside walls, the church faced the dilemma to move or rebuild. The dynamics of the neighborhood had changed drastically. Reflecting on the many acts of love and kindness afforded to them in their time of need, it became obvious that they had indeed been blessed to be a blessing. The decision was made to stay where they were, ministering to the changed neighborhood around them. God's gift of love continues on.

That congregation gets it! Do we? Let us never forget, in our wealth of blessing, there are those less fortunate, hungry, hurting, in need of just our time and love.

Go today, live a blessing with open eyes and hearts, into a world who needs to know and feel God's love.

Good Morning!

Last week most of my friends got invited to a party. I wasn't invited, but it didn't bother me since I had plans on this day anyway. The night before the party, my son got invited by the younger brother of the party host. “Even though the party is for my brother you should come,” the boy told my son. “After all your Dad will already be coming, I'm sure.” When my son relayed the message I snapped, “Your Dad most certainly will not! Because your Dad wasn't invited!” So yeah, I guess it did bother me… a little.

Ironically, the morning after the party, as we were getting ready for church, my nephew brought this shiny piece of paper into the kitchen where I was and said, “Can I have this, I've been pretending all week that this was my guitar but mom says I can't take it home without asking.” Looking down at the paper he held, I immediately saw it for what it was, not a guitar, or a pretty picture but the invitation to the party “I didn't get”.

“When did you get this?” I asked Gibby. When I checked the mail for aunt Suzanne on Wednesday,” But the funny thing is many of us walk around pouting all the time feeling like we haven't been invited to God's party because of all the things we have done, when the truth is God has issued an invitation to anyone willing to open the door and let him come in.

Good Morning:

When we first learned to walk, we often fell down, but did we stay down? No, we reached out to the extended hand of our mother or father, who helped us back on our feet. This happened over and over again until we finally learned to walk on our own.

We should learn to walk with our Heavenly Father's helping hand the very same way. When we find ourselves falling or feeling down and discouraged, we can reach out to God through prayer, and accept his merciful helping hand. Now, have a great day knowing that the loving hand of God is always there ready to help you, no matter what you may face.

We all have those moments we will remember forever.  When our oldest grandson, Will, was around 4, he was spending the weekend with us. He was having a difficult time falling to sleep one evening, so I laid down with him. We listened to and talked quietly about the bullfrog and whipporwills we heard outside the bedroom window. As we talked I stroked his small forehead, and he became so very still I thought he was asleep. Suddenly this sweet little voice softly said, “B, I love to listen to you breath.” My heart melted at that moment.

Have you ever thought that we are given the opportunity to be quiet, relax and listen to God breath? That is what God is saying in Psalms 46:10 when we are reminded, “Be still and know that I am God.” Through the sound of a gentle breeze, raindrops, birds....even deafing silence.

When we take the time out of our busy lives to just be, we can feel  warmth, security, and rest found only in our heavenly Father.

Go today, basking in the beauty, love, and peace of God.

DENNIS

Good Morning. My name is Dennis Gossett, and I am the new Associate Pastor at Central. My family and I moved from North Caroline to Meridian. Even though we are not from the area, we are no strangers to Mississippi. Both my wife and I grew up in Oxford. So, returning to this great state is like coming home.

Often, when we come back, it may seem that we have returned to an unfamiliar place. When you are away new things come up and old things are torn down. At times, these places are almost unrecognizable.

Scripture teaches of a young man who had left his father's house for a time. Upon returning, he wondered how his father would treat him and how others would think of him. Despite all of his fears, the father embraced his wayward son and rejoiced at his return.

Central wants to invite you to come and worship the One who will always embrace you and announce to you, “Welcome home!”

Do you live in a world of scarcity? Or a world of plenty? Most of us choose to live in a world of scarcity. We worry we do not have enough to feel secure, so we continually strive to earn more, have more, and or save more. We fear we will never have enough to own the house we dream of or the car we wish we had or the right clothes. We fear we will not have enough to retire on, so we continually save more.

But there is another choice. We can choose to live in a land of plenty. When the house, car, clothes you have are enough, then you don't need more. When you trust the future, you do not have to save more and more for retirement.

God's plan is that all of us have plenty. This is Bob Peden of Central United Methodist Church. I encourage you today to choose to live in God's land of plenty. If you do, you will find that not only do you have enough for yourself, but you have more than enough to share with those around you. It is your choice.

JOHN BRANNING

Good Morning! I'm John Branning the new Lead Pastor of Central United Methodist Church. On the 18th of June, I was appointed to lead and serve the people of this historic congregation. I am the youngest Lead Pastor in the history of Central; and at age 39, I am honored to be a part of the spiritual legacy of Central United Methodist Church and the city of Meridian.

Even though I am the youngest Lead Pastor in the history of Central, I have served in the Mississippi Annual Conference for 20 years. I have found that it is never easy to move to a new place and to start over in life. To find new friends and relationships are difficult at times. Yet, Scripture teaches us that we are family through Christ and knowing this means that I am not a stranger to Meridian but have simply come home to my family.

If you need a place to feel at home, then I offer you an invitation to come and visit us at Central and let us welcome you home.

Good Morning!

Every morning I pray the armor of God over my church leaders, my pastor, and the

church elders. I ask God to bind them together and swaddle them with His belt of

truth. I request that He walk them into His peace, which is beyond human

understanding, and help them leave peace in their wake wherever they go. I ask the

Lord to filter their input and output, everything they see and hear, feel and think, say

and do through His helmet of salvation and the breastplate of righteousness. Then I

ask that He arm them with the sword of His spirit, which is the Word of God, and the

shield of faith, so that their hands hold only those essentials. And I find as I pray for

them by name each day that my love and trust for them grows.

These are the words I read in the front of my grandmother's Bible a few short months

after she passed away. Though I never heard her say these words out loud or write

them in her Bible, I knew them to be her words by the way I had seen her liver her

life.

What are the words and legacy you will leave behind one day and where will they be

written?

Good Morning!

People say they want to make their own decisions and set their own course.  But being

a decision maker can be tough.  After all, the world is constantly changing.  You may

have a lead on the past and the present, but the future is anyone's guess.  Unless you

happen to know the One who knows the future.

God can give you the wisdom you need to make good choices.  God can show you

timeless principles in the Bible and lead you to wise people who can help you put

things into proper perspective.  And after you've made a tough decision, God can fill

your heart and mind with peace.  But, remember to use your heart as well as your brain

in your decision making.  Because, whatever you do or say affects others.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.

Change... it is a continual part of life. At Central we have said goodbye to pastors Bob

Rambo and Owen Weddle and are welcoming John Branning and Dennis Gossett.

Summer is the time for graduations, weddings and moving. While change by nature is

hard, it also opens many doors. As you prepare to see your child off to college, you are

at the beginning of an adult relationship with your child. When entrusting your

precious child to another, you are also opening your arms a little wider to hold your

growing family.

A move offers an opportunity for broadening your horizons of friends. In Jeremiah

29:11 God reminds us “For surely I have plans for you. Plans for your welfare, not for

harm, to give you a future with hope.” This does not mean that we will be spared

change, pain, suffering or hardship, but that God will walk with us along the way. Go

today, embracing life...changes and all!

Good Morning: When they called and told me that the one I loved had died, I just

couldn't take it, I just sat right down and cried. Then I thought how happy, oh, how

happy he must be. For I know he's in heaven. From all worry, he is free. He's walking

with my master; he's happy as can be. Jesus, oh, Jesus! Please, now, you must help me.

Those are some of the words to a song I wrote the night I learned my father had died.

Those thoughts got me through that awful time and then later when my son died.

Isn't it wonderful to believe in the promises made to us by our Heavenly Father? Life

doesn't end with death. A full and wonderful Eternal life is just beginning. How

amazing our God is!

Have a wonderful day.

Good Morning!

Sometimes when we wish someone a Happy Birthday, they respond, “Well, it beats the

alternative.”  Those of us who know Jesus, know that this is not true.  While we enjoy

our life on this earth and are in no particular hurry to leave it, we know that when we

do leave it, we will go to be with Jesus in Heaven.  The Bible tells us that Heaven is a

place where “…there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.  There shall be no

more pain…”

As inhabitants of an imperfect world, we cannot even imagine the wonders of Heaven

and the perfect peace and happiness that we will find when we get there.  In the words

of the old hymn, “When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!

When we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory!”

If you do not already know Jesus, I urge you to get to know Him.  Central United

Methodist Church invites you to worship with us this Sunday.  We have a

contemporary worship service at 8:30 and a traditional service at 10:55 with Sunday

School at 9:45.

Come and meet Jesus at 1004 23rd Avenue this Sunday.

Today as we celebrate 4th of July, we remember the price paid for our freedom. In that

same spirit, there is a story about William Tyndale, an Englishman, who in 1525

translated and was able to publish a New Testament in English. Church authorities at

the time were not pleased and they angrily sought and brought Tyndale back to

England where he was burned at the stake. As he was dying, he uttered these words:

"Lord, open the eyes of the King of England." His prayer became a prophecy, as it was

the King of England, King James, went on to publish the entire Bible in English about

a hundred years later.

This Independence Day, don't let your Bible sit on the shelf gathering dust.

Let the freedom we enjoy on this day serve as a reminder of the freedom and

forgiveness we have in Jesus Christ.  William Tyndale offered his life so we could read

about this spiritual freedom in our own language.

As we celebrate our earthly freedom this Independence Day, let us also celebrate

eternal freedom.

Good Morning!

“The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; His ears are open to their cries

for help.” Psalm 34:15

“What?” my son asked when he saw me watching him. “Nothing,” I said shaking my

head. Not completely satisfied with my explanation he went back to what he was

doing but soon looked up again and asked, “What? What did I do wrong this time?”

“Nothing at all son, I just like watching you,” I said.

Different verses in the Bible tell us that God's eyes are on us. I use to feel

uncomfortable thinking about God watching me. Waiting for me to slip up and fail, I

assumed. Then one night I heard the comedian Mark Lowry talk about God's eyes

being on us, not because he is waiting for us to mess up but because he loves us so

much that he can't take His eyes off of us, God is proud of us, His creation and because

of that he likes to watch us as we go through life.

So now when I think of God's eyes on me, I think of the way I love to watch my kids

and I just smile at what I've helped create.

honesty makes us conquerors…

Our world is steeped in sin and corruption. It is easy to slip away into the sinful part

of the world. We are called by God to stand firm and be resolute in holding to our

moral orders from God.

When we take our eyes off Christ by looking at the world and its attractive sin, we set

ourselves up for a great fall. Our mind, heart, and body respond to the call of the

sinful world. We must be honest and confront the sinful yearnings we feel. If we are

not honest about the wiles of Satan in our life, our self-lies will doom us.

We are set free only when we are honest. When we are honest, Christ is faithful and

will come to our aid and help us resist the temptation we feel.

When we are honest, we are conquerors over the darkness trying to pull us down.

Have a great day.
